Project: classic road to gravel bike commuter thingy

Ok, so let me preface this that I am 5’11” and most comfortably ride a 56-57cm road bike. Haven’t settled on a gravel size for me...though I am starting to like Slimestone Peugeot more and more...

So how and why did I obtain 3 62cm vintage classics (sort of)...? I sort of happened into them (I got sucked in).

...well, interestingly, my sister’s boyfriend needs a gravel-comfortable commuter due to some challenges (I bought the bikes before so can’t say I was clairvoyant). It was serendipitous rather than purposeful.

The options (he chooses one and the other two will have to find a new home...). He liked the Peugeot, but I am not ready yet to give that up yet.

...which will he choose?

1983 Trek 500

While waiting to hear...here are the requests:
1. Wide tires...I am thinking 1.25 or 1.375 with 27 inch, 32mm with 700c
2. Flat or sort of bars that don’t have unusual twists...no back facing ends
3. Comfortable ride (all three should check this box)
4. Thumb shifters (index or not is okay)...this my questions in several places and my purchase of a stupid number of thumbies at bargainish prices...
5. brakes that work
6. Flat pedals that might have possibility for clips...

He will be choosing the saddle.

...And the winner is the Motobecane. Weird. Thought he'd choose the Trek or Dale. So there are two large frames in need of re-homing, and one bike that will need some TLC.

He chose wisely. The Trek and Cannondale are generic (and some folks boycott Trek bc of Lemond). Not sure if 650b will fit but choose the widest tires possible. A good saddle will make all the difference.

The wheels on it at the moment are 27/1.25. I am getting 27/1.375 to replace them, but will drop to 700c if I need to...

As stands...

Rusty spokes will buff out, right?

Might keep the drive train intact and go with friction thumbs...

Weinmann centerpull should be okay clearance wise, and with new pads should be okay...have to choose MTB brake levers wisely.

Not too bad rust wise. Just a bit of surface patina.

Headset will need derusting and chrome polish treatment...

Michelin Protek 27 inch tires tend to run wide; at least they do on my rims where they measure out to 1 and 3/8. The Moto likely has the best tire clearance. I like Cannondales but the Trek is the pick of the litter. Those two bikes will be easier to sell than the Motobecane so maybe your brother in law did you a favor.

Plus I will have an intact Motobecane turkey lever wrapped plastic bar stem combo to offer up!

When I'm doing an upright bar conversion, I like the Tektro FL750 over any MTB-style lever I've seen.

I might definitely be interested, though I have a set of Sunrace gumwalls coming as well. Sending a PM.

If you're getting rid of it, I might be interested in the Cannondale. What is the standover height with 700C wheels and tires on it?

Did this sister's BF get a close look at both the Trek and the Mb? The early GT were pretty light Vutus tubing. The later ones were significantly heavier Vitus Tubing. After you strip the MB, let him pick them up and confirm his choice. I initially chose the MB but I'm starting to like the Trek. (Folding Paselas are pretty sweet for 27" tires on hooked rims.)

I’ll check on that. It’s in decent shape. Came with 27”s.

He was completely uninterested in the ‘Dale, and originally chose the Trek...but when I found the MBK, he wanted that one.

The Trek is really nice despite a small amount of oxidation...

700s are just as easy. It’s just a bare frame.

I meant that the frame was meant for 27s, so with 700c, there should be a ton of clearance with them. OE was Shimano 600 short reach so I'd imagine some long reachers would be necessary.

I don't think he could have made a wrong choice, honestly. All three will be fine on gravel. The MB probably has the most comfortable geometry from what I know of French bikes (I'm looking at you fork rake) and it might have the widest clearance? the C'dale looks like a touring model with the mid-fork braze ons, and sport-touring Treks usually have generous clearances too. Either way, show us pics of the build.

The pile of clunk...

Lots of derusting and evaluation...

Challenge 1. Cheap buttocks pedal over tightened into SR Custom crank arm. No bueno. Then I figure out that the DS is Takagi. What to do. what to do...

Challenge 2. Lovely rust particulates on the headset...evaporust here we come!!

Challenge 3. Rust on spokes...always iffy on cleaning off the rust and going with the wheel...

The keepers:
Bottom Bracket is a replacement BB-72.
The crank will do if I can find a satisfactory matching NDS. Otherwise, not sure...
Suntour VGT RD, SunTour SL FD,
Weinmann Vainqueur 661 CPs with new shoes,
Freewheel, the wheels if I keep them.
Kalloy seatpost. Might shorten it.
Cable stops and guide

The needs
Suitable stem and bars
Cables (think we are going with black)

The new
Sunlite 27 x 1 3/8 tires
Shimano or Velo Orange friction/ratcheting shifters
brake shoes and down tube cable stop
Need to find a bar and stem that is appropriate.
Cables, grips and platform pedals

The need to find a new home...
Moto bars, stem levers and leatherette.
sun tour power ratchet dt shifters

Clunker clump.

Eek rust. Evaporust to the rescue

Rusty spokes...hmm. Dilemma here

Needs a new home. Really decent shape

The NDS arm that I struggled with then figured out the freaking thing didn’t match anyhow

The modern parts

Other than rust, these things are cool. Will need a new home.

The keeper items that are original.

Would love to find a decently matching arm, but tough to find.
