Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You could be slightly over trained? It happens. There are a lot of mornings where the first 10-20 minutes feel awful (some even more). I went out yesterday and felt exactly that way until about mile 10. Does it get better as you keep riding?

opposite, I felt fine the first 8 miles and then my legs just started feeling pretty sore and tired. Just focused on spinning and stopped caring about speed. Same thing happened yesterday as well. I prolly pushed it to hard the first day back from work and now I am paying for it. I also wonder if I need to up my protein intake even more.

I have a route I’ve been thinking about that I’m finally going to try Sunday weather permitting. The last climb gets up to a 25% grade, I’m hoping I can drag my fat ass up the hill. The other three I’ve done, but never in the same ride.

https://www.strava.com/routes/28275755

The 25% scares me a little, that’s fall off the back steep

Im not to sure. I’ll start keeping a journal again. I’ve been in a state of weight loss since I started riding, and my calorie intake was working well for what I wanted. I’m almost where I want to be weight wise.

The my fitness pal app works pretty well and you can scan the UPCs of ingredients to track nutrients and cals. To get that much protein I’m basically eating a pound and a half of chicken breast every day.

I went through a similar fatigued state last spring... or maybe it was the year before that. Regardless, I eventually figured out that I just wasn't getting enough sleep, which all ties in to letting the body recover. I used to be able to function normally with not much sleep, and I still can, if it's not going to be a physically demanding day. Not much sleep *and* physically demanding is a no-go in my 40s, though

Jezuz. Are you trying to pack on muscle? I thought that the general guideline for active adults was something like 1-2g per kg? I'm at ~85kg and usually take in somewhere around 120g/day.

This would make sense too. The last trip I was on I slept like ****. According to my fit bit I averaged 4.5 hours a night. Mostly I just stared at a wall.

Yeah, I was looking at a pretty regular 5-5.5 hours at the time. Started making a point of getting to bed earlier and things turned around pretty quickly. It may not be the source of your issue, and your issue may have just been an off day, but getting more rest sure as hell isn't a bad thing.

See you in another 4 yrs.
Nice to see you here, circumstances notwithstanding.

Indeed. His wit and very real outlook on things, will be missed. Even though we didn't see him as much, his drive-by's in here were gold.

I've heard this from riders and racers when they lose weight. Sometimes when they get below a certain point they can't make power anymore. This is guys who get super lean.
What's frustrating for me is I'll have a really good day, as in climb like I did 20 years ago, then a week later back to the slog up the hills thing.
