Will 28's fit my Ironman?

I like the 25mm CST Czar's currently on my '87 Ironman Master, and I like the Continental Ultra Sport's on my '92 Koga Miyata.

I'm thinking of following the trend and going to a 28 mm size, and wondering if they'd fit. The brake bridge would be the only issue, and from what I can tell the current ~1/4" space seems like it'd be enough clearance.

Anyone have experience with this size tire on this bike? I'd love to find a 28mm size with a white accent stripe, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Thanks!

I have an ‘86 with unicrown fork and it fits 28’s with ease.

I'll second that yes, I run 27mm tires on mine with the same fork and have plenty of room to spare.

I think the 87 Master is the 86 Classic frameset and therefore 28 GP4000 will fit.

28cm, definitely not.

But if you have 1/4" clearance at the tightest spot with 25mm, 28mm should fit fine (unless they're some of those ridiculously thick ones sold for fixed-gear riders.)

Good catch, I'll fix that gaffe!

Now the hard part...finding 28's that come with a white accent stripe.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Check Continental Ultra Sport and Vittoria Zaffiro tires for stripes and sidewall colors. Of the two I prefer the Ultra Sport -- tougher, grippier, better riding. Hard to mount without a bead jack, the only drawback to Conti's Ultra Sport tires.

Rear brake clearance will be the main challenge. And inserting/removing the wheels may require deflating the tires to squeeze past the brakes, even with the brakes opened as far as possible.

It was low-hanging fruit, I couldn't resist. Thanks for being a good sport.

The Ultra Sport III offers 28's only in black.
The white-striped ones look cooler, but everyone is saying I should be on 28's.

Hmmmm...
