I have been trying to get my wife to ride with me for some time. She always said that I rode too fast for her, so I thought a tandem might help. I spotted this Peugeot in the background of a CL garage sale picture when we were looking for furniture for my daughter's apartment. There was no mention of the bike anywhere in the ad. It was rough but complete, a 1980 model TH8. I lubed everything, replaced the rims with alloy and replaced the broken FD with a Sun Tour, I also changed the handlebars to a North Road type.

Pompiere, that's a nice bike, very much like ours but with original paint. We have the generator and nice B&M LED lights, but no fenders. Ours has a 36-spoke rear on the Atom hub and a 32-spoke front on a Shimano 105 hub.
Did you restring that rear wheel or find a new one? IIRC from the catalogs the 40-spoke wheel and the touring gear (lights, fenders) weren't listed in the catalog until '83. That TA crank was an option IIRC. One more thing, I can't tell from the pic exactly what RD that is but it appears to be a short-cage Suntour. I thought, but could be wrong, that they came with one of the Simplex long-cage RDs like the SX810 or 610 or 410 or whatever.
You should get lots of miles on that bike!

I had put a Sun Tour on until I could fix the Simplex, so that is probably what is in the picture. They are the original hubs re-laced to new 36 hole rims. I don't have the drum brake hooked up right now but we are pretty flat here, and the Mafacs work pretty good on the new rims so I think we'll be okay.

Do hook up the drum. I have ours rigged as original with the right hand operating both cantilevers and the left hand on the drum. I usually just brake with both hands and that drum does indeed make a big contribution to the stopping power. Of course if I rigged the two cantilevers on different hands it might be just as good, but then I'd have to decide how to rig the drum if it was rigged at all.

No, it's the same picture, taken right after I brought it home. The fender struts are pretty thin, so maybe you counted them as spokes? I am pretty confident on the age, since 80 is stamped on several parts. The person I bought it from said their in-laws had bought it in England, so it may have slightly different specs.
I needed the bars to be higher and wider, as I felt like I had no leverage with the original set up, so I have the North Road type with mountain bike levers. I have only taken it on a short solo ride, but it steers much better and the brakes stop well. When I tried the drum brake lever by itself, it didn't seem to have much effect. If we decide to try longer rides, I would want to get a taller stem and wider drop bars, so I would put the original brake levers back on. My wife does not like riding fast or long distance, so I think it will stay as a neighborhood cruiser for now. I could hook up the drum to a lever on her bar so she can feel like she has some control over the speed.

Great to see this thread revived. I was going to post about how that Sterling looked so great, but then I saw the wheels.

And a drive-side pic....
This was an ebay find- on my 5th wedding anniversary, instead of driving from New York City back home to my wife in Montreal, I drove to Philadelphia, bought the bike, stuck it in my van, then drove all the way home. I got in at 11h50PM, just in time to wish my wife a happy anniversary
I got a 2nd set of (more traditional) wheels, but the Aerospoke are fine. The bike is solid and rides like a dream. It was babied by its 1st owner who would clean it down after every single ride.

Yes, that's the so-called "Marathon" frame style, which was superseded by the "Direct Lateral" style in 1983.

1969 Jack Taylor Touring Tandem on the Lake Pepin 3 Speed Tour.
650b wheels, cyclo rear derailleur. It was a retro bike then.
Same bike as it appeared on the cover of the League of American Wheelmen magazine in 1975 (I want a copy if any one has that issue).

A Nashbar tandem I briefly owned in 2020. Insanely long top tubes and stems. I couldn't reach the bars. 1.25 threaded steerer. Nice Deore LX components.
after the old type masking tape was removed and the tape residue cleaned off.

I've posted both these elsewhere but they belong here...wife and I with our mid-80s Rodriguez at start of Eroica in 2017. We did our honeymoon on this bike in 1988. The other is our late 70s Ritchey Palo Alto we bought a few months ago. The Rodriguez is more rando than racer while the Ritchey is our hot rod.

Nice bikes here. Let me just post the original pictures of my 1977 Gazelle Tandem. It's in the long term processs of a rebuild and overhaul but I picked up too many other cool bikes in the meantime which... tend to take precedence right now. I do plan on finishing it before next summer though.

whoa. nice timing on the bump of this thread. I was just thinking that the JT tandem, which i've had for 8+ years and have barely ridden probably fits my son in the stoker position now. Might be time to see if thats the case.

Looks like I posted a link to this bike a long time ago, from before I had it built back up, so here are the before and afters. It's a 1936 Dawes, all original except the front bars and the fenders, and I added the headlight and bag. The frame is 531, which was first introduced in '35 but they clearly didn't know what to do with it yet as the bike still weighs 62 pounds. It has front and rear drum brakes but they are abysmal; anyone know where to find new 'Cyklbrake' pads? The derailleur cable is actually a continuous loop that has to be just the right length, but I didn't know what that length was as the original wire had a section missing. I just bought the longest tandem shift cable I could find and soldered it together and it miraculously works pretty well.

You could try and find a rebuilder that will reline those shoes, I would start with auto part stores, machine shop, restorer's, etc.
It used to be very common but now days the cheap new auto ones are less so no core, no rebuild.

Hardly worthy, but...
I scored this nice Trek T100 for a good price from a local pawn shop, hoping I'd one day find the right lady to share it with. Not only did I find her, she agreed to marry me only if we rode the tandem from the wedding to the reception!! But first I had to add some fatter tires and a pair of Brooks B-17 saddles. What a day, what a bike, WHAT A LADY!! I love you, Natasha!!❤️❤️
