Colnago Master build opinions.
I’ve been searching for something special for awhile. This Master Piu popped up for sale and I couldn’t resist. Now I’m torn on the build. I don’t want modern 10 speed, but not sure on 6-7 Super Record with d/t shifters or 8-9 with brifters. How would you build it. And it’s going to be a rider, not a wall hanger.

Ergos for me, always, is how I'd build it. I know you say "no" to 10 speed, but that's where I'd go if I could find a new(-ish) Veloce-or-better 10 speed groupset, in silver if possible... but even black would work nicely with this gorgeous frame.

I would be fine with older silver 10, just don’t want the newer black. I think all silver would look better.

If it were mine, and I did not already have a synchro 8-speed bike, that is what I would probably go with. I find it works well on my Gios, I wonder if all the trouble was on the 6/7 speed variants.

Old 8 or 9 speed Chorus
I like running 8 speed Campagnolo because 8 speed shimano wheels are cheap and plentiful, unlike Campy wheels from that era....

Gorgeous frame, its got the dt shifter braze ons, so I’d use them, its not like your unfamiliar with them. High end silver Campy 7-9 speed stuff, or whatever fits with the rear spacing. Would definitely not, bend that frame. Velocity Polished silver A23s, with an asymmetric back rim, Nitto seat post, bars, and stem. Probably black for the saddle, tape and cables.
But that’s just my opinion, I’ve seen some of your bikes, however you do it will be cool, pretty hard to go wrong with that starting point. Please keep posting pics, as you proceed.

I am with the suggestions above for Chorus/Record 8/9, or Dura Ace 7700. Both options have the polishable bling quality that would be a nice if expensive look.

After Dura Ace was suggested, I did a quick read and a lot of teams used Dura Ace on their race bikes.

Yup, 8/9 speed Shimano is league's better than 8/9 speed campagnolo.
Mapei riders on their C40s won lots and lots of races on 9 speed Dura Ace, Rabobank as well.

I dunno, to me it's certainly not as pretty, but of course that's subjective. If functionally only, it'd have to be really super-fantastic, bc I've always found Campy 8-9 speed to be quite good.

I've always gone 6-7 speed Super Record Campagnolo but seeing that this frame has underside top tube cable routing I'd say ergo shifting will look much better

Didn’t want to suggest that for a frame with that ancestry, but Dura Ace 7700 is a great idea, those are some of the best looking dt shift levers. If me I would definitely consider that.

Take the time and effort to find Chorus in 10 speed in silver. Way back when it was JUST being replaced by the black stuff (2007) , I built up an early 90s Battaglin frame built of Columbus MAX with the last of the silver Chorus. I went with the black Ergos, though. Last year I swapped the short cage derailleur for a new medium cage Veloce so I could run a 12-30, now I'm another 13 years older.
Are you wedded to the idea of a single generation of a single groupset? Because the other alternative is to mix. I have a Ritchey from 1996 with 7410 Dura Ace, where I replaced the STIs and rear derailleur with 7800 to get 10 speeds, but kept the brakes, front derailleur, and that beautiful 7410 crankset, as well as those fantastic hubs, rather than getting a 7800 crankset (ew.).

That's a sweet frame. Chorus 8 speed, DT shifters, definitely find a set of the Shamal (or Zonda?) wheels with the pink logo on the rim. White saddle and bar wrap.

Anyone who says this, has not ridden Campagnolo. The World Pro Teams rode Shimano because they paid more for them to.

Decision will be made Tuesday morning. I’m visiting my friend who has dozens of groupsets and wheels. Whatever I can pull together will do for now. But, he does have several Dura Ace and Campy opinions.
