Seat tube dent- A really worry?531C
Hi all. A Trek 620 is on our local CL. Looks decent. It'd be pretty cool to have. 531 CS Reynolds.Classic lugged, MUSA, hand made frame. Cheap. $150 obo. *But*, it has a dent in the seat tube. Dangerous? Fixable? Thanks for the second opinions.......

Dents are kind of a funny thing because you will just never know how they got there. A dent on the seat tube like that is not likely to be from a crash so it might be just fine. A dent on the top tube from a handlebar is likely from a crash so you might have other problems with the frame that may not be apparent.
If it comes with the bags and everything, I would pay $150 for that and make it my winter/rain beater.
Based on your location, you have neither of those things, lol. Maybe offer him $130 and see what happens.

Unless the frame size is spot-on, I'd pass. For me, tourers need to be on the larger side of my range.
The dent doesn't look that bad, but I'd have to change out several components, like the stem, saddle, rd, etc. And that chainstay looks pretty ugly. If the wheelset matches, and you can get it for $100, it would be more "in the money." Maybe the bags help, dunno.

It's likely fine but it's a bigger dent than I would like to see on one of my bikes. I'd offer a $100 for the bike and walk away if the seller doesn't take it. Basically I'd value it as a bunch of parts with a frame thrown in for free. That's a lowball offer but there are plenty of other fish in the sea without a large dent.

I wouldn't worry one bit about the dent causing a failure, especially in the area it's in. Plus it would be about the easiest possible dent to pound out. I've never seen a seat tube crack in the middle, I'm sure it's happened somewhere, I've just never seen it.

i knew an older man that rode bikes in all kinds of condition that would scare me...or atleast make me nervous. he rode them for years. iow's, i wouldn't worry about that at all
as for the price, i think $150 might be quite fair....depending on the wheelset. a really good used wheelset can run a person $150 alone. anyway, if all those goodies come with it, $150. if not, haggle it down a bit.
edit: i should note, something like could easily go for around twice that in my area

Thought about trying a pipe inside to pop it out . Then After thinking about it, wondering what effect that much of a kink would have in frame alignment. Going to go get a look at it this evening, try to ride it to see if it feels like it’s true. I’ don’t have a good way of having the alignment checked. Not interested enough to send it to a frame shop!

I have a tool I made to take that kind of dent out of a seat tube. It's a long pipe with a wedge like a stem. Works well. I wouldn't worry about leaving the dent there though

That thing was easily $150 in parts alone.
