I prefer ‘victim of vehicular violence’.
The idea that the impact of words and phrases somehow don’t matter is ridiculous. Controlling word choice is power, it has a major impact on society.
Use of certain words and phrases impact your thoughts in a subtle way and shapes your identity, even your reality. A cursory review of the current political divisions in the US easily confirms this.

I think the oversize nature of US motor vehicles is a major part of the problem, so I think "SUV Hits Child" is actually a message people should hear, and a lot more to the point than "Driver Hits Child".
Bicycling advocates have spent a lot of effort getting bicycles recognized as vehicles, I think "vehicular violence" as a blanket term would therefore be a pretty bad idea.

Should the Star Tribune wrote to which part of the vehicle that made contact with the pedestrian, or would using the vehicle's paint be more acceptable & accurate?
but but but, what if in between the surface area of paint the pedestrian, there was a blob of fly? Would that change it to being the blog of fly making contact with the pedestrian?

Yes, words can have impact, but that doesn't mean that the word choices being debated are ones that shape thoughts or reality in the way people are claiming.

Yes, you can hardly discuss safety of bicycling without mentioning the automobile. And in terms of the automobile, the words chosen implies no-fault in the part of the driver.
