Is this a good deal?
Nishiki 21 Speed Lightframe Bike - Castanet Classifieds
Im new to biking and looking to get an affordable but decent bike. I have no idea if this is a good deal. If anyone has any input that would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm...
With Cantis, that would probably be classified as a "touring" frame rather than a "racing" frame.
The rear derailleur is one of the more unique Suntour derailleurs.
Anyway, it is probably worth $250 Canadian dollars ($190 USD) if the bike is generally in good shape. When were the bearings last serviced?

The subject bicycle is a 1986 Nishiki International, designed for the Canadian market by Norco and manufactured in Japan by Kawamura. It would be considered lower mid-range. The frame is Tange butted CrMo with CMn forks and stays. It has the major amenities for touring such as cantilever brakes, triple crankset , 40 spoke rear wheel and eyelets for both fenders and racks but there are some price point concessions in the omission of bar end shifters, extra bottle bosses and lo-rider mounts. The bicycle appears to be in well maintained condition and is a very good value, provided there are no major, unseen issues and the frame size is correct for you.
As noted, the triple rear derailleur was designed to wrap large quantities of chain (42T). The design was jointly developed by Nishiki, and SunTour, with design being exclusive to Nishiki for the 1985 model year. The life of the design was cut short by Shimano's introduction of indexed shifting in 1985, which caused SunTour to shift priorities and focus all their attention on the introduction of AccuShift for 1987.

$249 is nothing to get excited about. It's reasonable. It's a Made in Japan (pre-Taiwan) Nishiki which is nice. Canti brakes are very nice. (Sometimes if you're lucky, you can find bikes like that for $150 or less).

Welcome to the forums BMatthews, if you decide to get a vintage bike hopefully you will stick around.
This Nishiki with canti brakes would easily fetch $190(US) around here. The advantage of canti's is you can ad larger tires and ride dirt\gravel trails. Plus the triple chainring upfront will make it easier to climb hills if you live in a hilly area. The condition looks to be excellent.
