Nishiki Regal (1980s?)

Picked this bike up today for almost nothing and wanted to know a bit about it. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

The serial number indicates 1983 manufacture for the Canadian market. It's not in the 1983 Canadian catalogue. so it must be a 1984 model manufactured in late 1983. The Regal was a mid-1980s entry level model and this is corrobarated by the Toshiba tubeset, stamped dropouts, nutted hubs and 27" rims.

Thanks tmar! How is toshiba tubing compared to cromo or hi tensile? Never heard of the tubeset before.

Toshiba was Kawamura's favoured tubing for entry level Nishiki models during the 1970s and 1980s. There were different grades of Toshiba tubesets, ranging from mild steels to hi-tensile steels. I have yet to see a Toshiba tubeset in a higher grade carbon-manganese or chrominium-molybedenum alloy. Regardless, Kawamura generally sourced for these better tubesets from Tange. Given the era and level, your frame is likely a hi-tensile steel.

While not high end the tube sets on these are very good on par with basic cro-mo or high tensile of the time if not better, I have custum Sport with this tube set that has about 10.000 on it and it still rides good.
