Not likely, no. In my former place I could leave the screen door open until maybe 11am or so because there were no bugs. The bats wipe them out overnight. After noon the new hatchlings or migrants move in and become a minor nuisance.

I went to the club ride start and there were 3 rides on offer, at least 3 that people were talking about doing. One of them went into the mountains, not super high, just 5400 feet at the highest point. I toyed with the idea but nobody slow enough was doing it so I joined a group of a dozen doing a shorter ride which still had almost 2900 feet of climbing with some steep slopes.

I had dressed to go up higher so I was sweating profusely before long. Fortunately, one of the ladies needed a bathroom stop so I had a chance to shed multiple layers. After that we went up on Mulholland Drive and the views were spectacular. Some of the steep, twisty descents were wet but nobody had a problem. Short day but still some hard work. Even getting close to the end there was sprinting on a few rollers. Supposed to drizzle again tomorrow.

I Zwifted on my new Zwift Hub. Still need to calibrate it and make sure ERG mode is off, but I like the direct drive trainer concept so far. Especially now that my old Tacx Vortex is at death’s door and won’t connect with Zwift at all.

Been raining here most of the day so I did some car work. Minivan #1 blew a head gasket or lower intake manifold gasket and since it had long ago been in a front end collision that basically pushed everything on the passenger side of the front of the car back a few inches, it's REALLY hard to get at some of the stuff that needs getting at to get to the LIM gasket

So I moved some parts over to minivan #2 and made sure most things are working on it. Tomorrow I look into moving the trailer hitch and trailer wiring harness over. Maybe the rear window wiper, too.

Wants to die at stoplights sometimes, just drops down to 600 rpm and I have to blip the throttle to get it to idle at 900 again, but then it stays at 900.

If it has electronic throttle clean the throttle body. If it's a cable throttle the shaft bushings might be worn out and it might be binding or landing in a different spot sometimes.

I should clean the throttle body anyways, just blasted the MAF out. After sitting for a year or so, this gas might not be that great either. But I have a feeling it's a vacuum leak, I may have borrowed a vacuum line from this one for the other one at some point. I'll have to take inventory under the hood tomorrow

A vacuum leak can make it idle faster unless it's a small leak near 1 cylinder. If it's a cable throttle you can tell if the IAC valve is working by starting without touching the throttle. It should flare up a few hundred rpm then settle back to idle speed. Cold start it should go to high idle for a few minutes.

Part of the problem is that I can no longer drive at night, at least until after I get my laser surgery. So we hatched a plan where I would drive in late afternoon and park it, and then she would drive it home. I took the bus home. She was home by 11.

I like driving. My wife likes flying. When I have to go in to the office in Pittsburgh, it generally takes as long to fly as to drive after layovers etc.

If we’re taking a trip somewhere, we usually drive to our house in Marblehead and fly out of Logan, much easier to get direct flights than Albany.

For a budget trainer, the Hub looks really good. I am still using my KIKCKR Snap, but if I were needing a new trainer, would likely go for the Hub.

Early impressions are entirely positive given its price point. DC Rainmaker did a really good writeup on it if and when you get to the point the Snap needs replacing.

I’m not typically an “early adopter” but I’m happy with this purchase. It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves in the coming years.

Chilly ride. There were some icy sections from frozen runoff. We were extra careful but a friend went down at about 3MPH on a full-width ice patch…he seemed to be ok and we resumed, but his RD shifting was wonky on the easier gears and we thought he may have bent the RD hanger inward from the crash. A few miles later he shifted and the whole RD came off. He had to make the call of shame. He rides Di2 and the wire broke so the black wire coming out of the RD has 1 cm of shiny copper wire showing. He was upset that he may need a new RD. I suggested this may be a common enough occurrence that it could be reconnected and all he needs is a new RD hanger. But I don’t know squat about Di2, so unknown if it’s an easy fix (or not). Anyone know?

Good to hear. I am hopeful to get some more time out of my Snap, but if/when I need a new trainer the Hub looks like it will be a good choice.

I wonder if DCR will be publishing an updated annual winter trainer article. It’s usually done by now.
