Purchasing a CAAD8 frame. Any idea what year?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A universal one could be made to work, but you would need to add some lining to protect the chainstay bridge area from rubbing.
Thanks! Ordering one today!

First off, I am a Clydesdale. So I've never seriously chased weights on the bike. I recently weighed my 1986 KHS Fiero with modern STI... Surprisingly, lighter than expected at 25 pounds 15 ounces ready to ride...

Well. Now I had to weigh the CAAD8... Not ready to ride. But had it nearly complete minus cables and bar tape. I draped the chain over seat to weigh the bike...

I could go lighter if I wanted carbon stem and bars, spend money on carbon wheels. But this is nearly 9 pounds lighter than the KHS. Probably will be the lightest bike I've ever ridden...

Now I need to get my 98 Cannondale CAD2 R200 back together and weight it... And the Redhead, 92 Trek 1400.

Nearly ready to ride, it has already had a 2 mile shake down. Just some minor adjustments needed, and bar tape.

It has SRAM Red 53/39 crankset, Force 2x10 brifters, Rival FD and RD, and 12 to 30 cassette. Without bar tape, comes in at 18 lbs 5 oz...

I do need to swap out the KMC chain, it is noisier than I like. I have the same chain on my old KHS 2x10 5600 105 Shimano and it's quiet... So I ordered a SRAM 1031 chain. Hoping that takes care of the minor shifting issues and noise.

The SRAM Double Tab is interesting, and will take some getting used to...

I will say this. WOW. It feels fast and the shake down ride I stayed in the big ring for the entire ride, after checking it for shifting... I feel everything from the rear of the bike, but the carbon fork doesn't transmit that same energy. And the Cobb seat is nice...

Another shakedown ride. Less than 2 miles. I will change the chain for certain. Love the light feel. Just having a tough time choosing bar tape!

I may have to take this to my mechanic for final tweaking. It is rideable, and makes me feel fast. Just need some fine adjustments to get it "there".

I was waiting to ride this more when I get down to 240. I'm at 248, down from 378! So, why not enjoy it now?

Had a chance to take the CAAD8 out with a faster group. Glad I went with them, happier that I took the 8 over my KHS. 7 pounds difference, and gearing paid off. A good 30 miles, I slowed them down on a 3.4 mile mild climb. But stretched the bike's "legs" to 38 mph chasing the guys...

I made the mistake of changing my rear wheel with 12-30 cassette for my other wheel with 12-27. Not a huge difference to most, but it slowed me on the climb. My fault...

It was a good day, a good ride, and made new friends...

35+mph... Bumpy chip seal road, and cheap action cam do not make for good video...

I followed that 30 mile ride a few days later with a 20 mile ride sponsored as a wellness ride at work. The hill was a pair of 1/2 mile Cat 4 climbs, and I made it. But no speed records were won!

Been out on my 29er playing dirt lately...

If you are referring to my affair with the Redhead, night and day.

1992 Trek 1400 was a fast ride, was only a little bit harsh compared to my 1986 steel KHS. If I recall, I think I stopped out at 31mph on this bike. But, it was spring and I was 25 pounds heavier. I don't know if I could hit 38.9 mph on thec1400 now or not, likecI did the 8...

The ride between the 1400 and the 2006 CAAD 8 is pretty drastic, to my untuned buttocks... and the 8 is quite a bit lighter, though I never weighed the 1400 before I gave it to my son in law.

I could compare the 1400 to my 98 CAD2 R200. I. Ever felt it was too stiff, though some say it is. I may have to go ride all 3 back to back sometime and see...

Not sure that helped...

Hey zjrog,

I own the exact same frame (Cannondale Caad8) and I wondered if one can fit 28mm wide tires into the frame! Did you try 28mm wide tires with this frame? from the pictures I can see that you use 25mm wide tires!
Thanks a lot !

Sorry for the late reply, I've been preoccupied lately and not thinking about bikes... I know, I should be ashamed, but I'm having ankle fusion surgery tomorrow...

I did try 28s, and felt the rear was just too tight a fit to feel comfortable riding. 25s fit fine. I think a lot might depend on wheel width and brand of tire as well. My old way of thinking hates super skinny rims.

I had a CAAD7 (R2000) a while back and 28's were very tight against the seat tube in the back. I stayed with 23's and 25's. The CAAD7 and 8 had the same geometry, IIRC.
