In light of my recent thread regarding dream bike and bike sizing, I finally found one of mine in MY size!! The frame is solid with no rust but the paint has seen better days; I may getting it powdercoated due to the great results I had recently seen on other forum members' bikes, but I am searching around for the best prices/thinnest coats. It seems like the previous owner used this as a TRI bike due to the iron man stickers and aero bars that it installed.

If you're wondering why there's no seatpost installed it's because it had a 27.2 post installed, and I'm positive that it is supposed to have a 26.8 post (the post was tight in there to say the least!). If you happen to have a shimano seatpost in 26.8 I'd definitely be interested

I may have paid a bit too much for this beater, but the bike rides great and it's a keeper for the long haul.

Can someone help me identfy the year? the serial number reads : IS35872. If I'm reading the asian serial number chart correctly, it's not a Miyata built frame like many of these earlier allez frames were.

I'm also interested in any shimano aero seatposts in 26.8 (or any frame components really) so if you have a spare one around your garage you wouldn't mind parting ways with let me know!

I have the exact same frame/bike in a 56cm. I purchased it new in 1987 at Breakaway in Augusta, Ga. I was told it was a leftover 1986. All Suntour SuperbPro with a Specialized Crankset and Mavic G 40 rims with Sp hubs. It's a great frame with a wonderful ride.

Agreed, this looks like a 1986 model but the serial number indicates September 1983 manufacture, which would make it a 1984 model. Is there a Merz decal on the chain stay?

I would be very surprised if this actually needs anything but a 27.2 seatpost, highly unlikely given era, brand and all else. Far more possible the seatclamp area has been pinched, overtightened, distorted or such, probably also needs cleaned and possibly reemed.

I have an identical Allez SE in 56 and the serial number indicates a late '84 Miyata built frame. It is a 26.8 seatpost.

There's no Merz decal on the stay, but it seems like the previous owner had taken off many of the decals or they were just weathered away over time

Well, went to the local bicycle kitchen to tear down my frame and while I was paying the shop fee a volunteer was trying to hammer out my seized stem. Next thing you know this happens.
Luckily the local frame builder is Steve Rex; he quoted me for the repair and I dropped it off this afternoon. I'm disappointed but happy it'll be fixed in a few weeks. I guess this means I HAVE to do that repaint I was mulling over after all haha.

Finally got that repair done on the frame, now all I have to do is find the right color to paint it!

OP,
I hope that the shop that damaged the frame paid for the repair...if not they should have, I would also ask them to help with the repaint.
Personally, I always prefer original paint even if it is in poor condition....that's just me.
I would check the tube for deformation before I had it powder coated, in the pic with the damage it was dented at the guide causing a bulge 90 degrees from the guide...I wouldn't want to paint it and find out that there were still some issues that would show up after painting.
I a still looking for one in my size... the same size as yours.

Checking for issues has more to do with painting a frame that could use some extra finishing... the bike would have ridden just as well with the bent cable guide, it never hurts to be sure before and not after.

I finally got the frame back from spectrum and I couldn't be any happier. The pictures don't do the work any justice!

Anyhow, here's a build update picture; will post better photos when she's all clean and ready to ride haha

According to Specialized they do not keep a registry of the serial numbers and that you can't use the serial to trace the history like you can with a vintage Trek. Specialized has said that the serial numbers are more for using in the case of theft / insurance.

Is everyone just going off the year because of known examples that followed a similar serial number convention ?

The paintwork on that SE is stunning! The darker grey metallic is sooooo nice, and works superbly with the decal colors. Excellent component choice, too. All those silver polished bits just add to the glow. And as an Octalink fan, you know you have a mint crankset when you still have the "Octalink" sticker on there (in addition to the logos being perfect).

No one's mentioned what appears to be an Ironman safety sticker on the handlebars? @RobbieTunes, can you confirm? This would mean that this bike was ridden in an Ironman sanctioned event, perhaps even the Big Kahuna. I also see evidence of other stickers that may or may have not been safety stickers from other races.

BITD triathlons used to require bike inspections and a "safety sticker" would be applied as proof. Often they would outsource this to one or more LBS's in the area as a free service. It got them into the shop, and gave them an opportunity for a sale. Lots of helmets, shoes, repairs, shorts and jersies were sold that way.

thank you!! It's actually just the metallic Ritchey Charcoal Grey that the Road Logic used to come in until last year. The octalink crank I bought NOS.

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but I am planning a resto on my '84 Allez and cannot for the life of me find original-style stickers for it.
The Allez stickers on this frame look to be the route I'd like to go..! Can you, or anyone else, maybe help point me in the right direction ?
