Brilliant, and on a different note I also miss "For better or for worse" an equally brilliant strip written by Lynn Johnston

Maybe expensive helmets. There's a huge variance in price on helmets from like $10 to $350 and more and the expensive ones have not proven to be any safer. They may be lighter or more aerodynamic or stylish, but it seems like there is just a lot of margin on the high end for what is just a EPS and polycarbonate sandwich. I do have $150 helmets for my wife and I. I'm probably a sucker.

For the most part, bicyclists have it made. If you really want to get soaked, get into boats. Seriously. I reveled in cycling when I first got into it because of how utterly cheap even the "good stuff" is. Used and vintage items make top-end stuff even more affordable, which isn't the case in many other avocations.

To be fair, there's a significant difference in quality, durability, wicking and comfort between a $20 and a $100 jersey. I'm just not sure that difference really matters to most people, but my $20 Amazon jersey definitely feels cheap compared to my others (an ancient team one in a sale for $15, a charity one for $60, and bargain supermarket ones for $7.50/15).

Whether there's much difference between a $100 and a $300 Jersey I couldn't say.

But will old guys who ride prone-position self-powered vehicles still make wildly incorrect assumptions about me and my bike if I'm not wearing a fancy name-brand matching kit?

BTW, those are bottles with some heavy duty insulation. If I was riding in 100 degrees heat, it might be worth it to me. You have no experience with this, but water in regular bottles gets pretty hot on a long ride.

I’ve gotten two Rapha Core jerseys for $55 each. Really nice product with a full zipper, 3 pockets and a fourth zippered one.

Wanted to get a third during their recent sale. Unfortunately, the color that I want sold out in my size quickly.

I have a pair of Camelbak insulated bottles. I like them and they seem durable and have lasted years already. I guess it takes longer for it to get hot but I drink it pretty fast. I don't remember what I paid for them but they are a quality product.

This is why I dislike the thread topic so much--value is subjective so long as the product actually does what it's supposed to. Something that is dysfunctional is objectively a waste of money. But who the hell cares whether or not I or anyone else on this thread thinks you did or didn't waste money on those bottles? You like them and they've lasted for years.

I would totally pay big bucks for a water bottle that kept my water cold in the summer.
I have a Camelbak Podium Ice and a Polar Insulated and they both suck.
Even if I fill them and freeze them overnight, they are luke warm by mile 40.

On a hot day I would have finished both of them before mile 40. If it was really hot maybe a 3rd by then.

I've just gotten used to drinking warm water. Insulation takes up space that I'd rather have filled with water.

How long does it take you to get to mile 40?

I have a Podium insulated bottle and if the temperature is in the upper 80s or higher, the water is warm by about 90 minutes. I really don't start getting thirsty until about 30 miles into a ride, so the insulation is really of no use.

same here

at times I will place ice cubes in water bottles before a ride ... later wonder why ... but then will do it again
