That is not the CB - but it is an old unknown frame with pretty Nervex legere lugs that I ran as single speed for a while. A rough job, but I planned to build the frame into something better - a light(ish) 2-hour ride.

It hung on my garage wall for a few years as I was overseas.

I then arranged for it to be stripped and powder-coated and this is what they found

I was annoyed but I remembered an kind old man called Hugh (in his mid 80's) who offered me an old frame that he didn't want his daughters to have to deal with someday.

I went round to his house one evening to pick it up and this is what he gave me.

He said he got it in second hand in the late 50s when he was 16. He rode it on club rides, races and a few tours. I said I would do my best to honour its history and I would take it round when it was built up for him to see.

I took it to my local bike co-op with some pieces from my parts bin for them to put together (as they would do a better job than me) and this is what I ended up with.

Here is a spec list.
1952 Claud Butler frame and fork (frame number 529 3910 - September 1952) with an unknown but quality headset
Unknown alloy bars wrapped with Shimano Pro tape
Dia Compe Grand Compe levers
Weinnman 730 callipers
Pellisier hubs laced to modern Alex 27" rims (built by Al Gow of Wheelcraft - a local legend wheel builder)
Panaracer Pasella 32mm tires
Holdsworth Il Primo Milano steel stem
Tange Bottom Bracket (new)
Modernish Shimano cranks with SR 52 and Stronglight 38 tooth rings
Shimano Golden Arrow front mech (I had an Arabesque but the limit screws were seized)
Shimano 600 Arabesque double shifters
Shimano 600 Arabesque long cage RD
Suntour 7 speed 13-30 freewheel
Unknown steel seatpost
Brooks B17 Special
Carradice Junior saddlebag

Features of note.
Hugh said the frame was vandalised outside the clubhouse (Glasgow can be pretty rough!) but the frame was repaired and re-enamelled by Rattrays of Glasgow, a local bike shop and builder of the famous The Flying Scot/The Scot marque which are highly collectable here in Glasgow (old Hugh has one too!). You can see their little badge on the top of the seat tube.
It received a 'first generation' Common Wheel sticker reserved for 'special builds' by the bike co-op despite me having 'desecrated' it by putting SPD pedals on it - it is crying out to be properly ridden!

It rides like a dream - the fork smooths out any road chatter and it flies along. I've not dealt with any big descents yet, but will take it easy on the century ride I have planned on Monday. It needs a bolt on water bottle cage though but my friend says I can borrow his second bottle cage on Monday!

Love it!

Lovely! My Claud Butler is also from 1952. Here's the spread on yours from the catalogue. Cheers!

Very nice bike

Could I be rude and ask for a photo from the NDS (eeeek) - I'd like to see the shift cable routing.
I'm rebuilding a 1961 Holdsworth and looking for ideas.

Beautiful! Just curious, when was the frame refinished and is this still the original paint scheme?

Yep, I can do that for you. There is one brazed on cable guide under the bottom bracket but we also drilled in to the shell and screwed a plastic cable guide for ease.
I'll put up the pic when I can.

Thanks - I'm not quite sure on the details of the repaint. Hugh said it was just the top tube that was damaged by some lad hitting it with an axe! (like I said some parts of Glasgow are rough!) The paint on the top tube is a slightly different shade to the rest of the bike. So I guess it is all pretty much the original paint bar the top tube after the repair.
