Interesting Frame Feature - What is it for?
Anyone have any idea what the function of this frame feature is? The top is machined with a conical depression inside and the bottom is open. Bike is a Trek that was donated to our local co-op.

Banned.
Trailer hitch, or maybe kiddos handlebars? Looks like a Trek.

The welds don't look like they match the factory welds. Does the paint look original around the "feature". Might be some custom job. Hard to imagine what.

Yes the paint looks original. My guess would be that the seat stay bridge was prefabricated and welded later into the frame.

Picture is not that great but the welds on the frame are obviously aluminum while the beads on the "thing" look more like they were brazed. Trailer attachment seems the only likely thing. The shape up it looks like it could be a bearing seat, allowing the hitch to pivot?

Ah ha. Finally found a photo of the bike, and with that mount in use.

Dumb feature but cool to find out what it does. If I am going to have a rack on a bike I want standard mounts or an integrated rack. not some proprietary mount that gets discontinued

It’s a factory feature. I haven’t seen the rack for it previously but I found something a long time ago about it being used for a hitch mount…proprietary, of course. It’s called the “frame port”.
