If you're wanting something that looks kind of vintage Campy, Takagi made these in both 110/74 and 130/86 triples.

The CX crowd loves 1x, especially now that they've fixed the various chain drop issues. I'm with you on being happier with 2x or 3x. Everybody talks about how 1x is so much simpler. Meanwhile, the rear derailleur has more technology in it than the first moon lander. I guess it is simpler for the rider as long as it's working.

SJX426 that Langster is very interesting. I rode an aluminum one (2003 or 04) as a commuter/town bike for several years and didn’t realize they made a steel version. I like it!

It is a 2010 model. I bought effectively the frameset with the BB, crankset and calipers. Built with bin parts and some purchases (wheels, sprocket, replacement BB, chain.)

Before I found the wheel set, I modified existing wheels for the single speed.

Options.....we love to make decisions with your bikes and your money:


1985 Raleigh, Ultegra triple (DA 7700 DT shifters). I've moved the
group to a Kestrel indoor bike, using Microshift 9-sp DT shifters.



1987 Ironman, Ultegra 6500 triple (funky crankset and had STI's).


1989 Battaglin, Centaur 10 triple, had the Record bar end/DT
shifters until I found Ergos. I'd go back to DT's if I found a set.



1985 Cinelli, 9-sp Racing T triple (Record Ergos). I'd switch to DT shifters
if I found some 9-sp Campy bar ends that would convert over. I was once
told I could use a Synchro body and the 9-sp insert, but that swap was over
my head.

For the most part, I'm in the "get a different but classic-looking crank with smaller rings" camp. RH, Sugino, Andel, Zeus, Holdsworth, Sakae, whatever gets the job done. And apart from moving the FD down a bit, your Campy drivetrain will be none the wiser...

...but I like doing this, too. My Bianchi Eros came stock with a triple and 28/28 low gear, which should have been satisfactory. But I've gotta tinker, and eventually it got a standard crank and tight cassette to yield a 42/21 low gear to make things more challenging. My hobby for a while became "claiming" the local hills on that bike.

Now that's good to hear. You were the person who talked me out of doing this to my De Rosa. I was only half serious then and probably would have done it anyway if I had really wanted to. That's kind of what this thread was about. I'm a big believer that most vintage bikes aren't so special that you shouldn't mess with them. A few are. I think if this one was all original might be. Since someone else already messed with it, maybe not.

I guess I didn't mention that I have a Racing T crank and rear derailleur, Daytona shifters and front derailleur, and Centaur brakes on the shelf waiting for a home. That's what I'd be using for this build.

Anything that can be undone should be on the table, even otherwise if you decide so.

I can't go on any remotely serious rides without this sort of thing, more so than ever lately as we saw last Sunday.

I rely on this all the time, saves me everytime I ride it.

The pump end, the seat tube water bottle bosses, the top tube cable guides for sure were added.
so was the spreading of the rear triangle.
graphics are later too. There were a few white bikes but they did not appear until 1975.
most most probably the shift bosses were added. Masi had them, they would add them but by request.

I would upgrade.
I would not drill for recessed brakes.
this might push you to Tekro calipers.

Build it to ride.
i have 8 classic italians, kept all the components. Problem is, i cant ride with the old stuff.
all of them are built with either 7700 or 7800 groups, 46, 48 or 50 chainrings, 28 or 30 tooth cassettes with short cage derailleurs, dura ace c24 wheels with 28 tires.
all of them get frequent use in rotation
best of both worlds and is reversable

this might push you to Tekro calipers.
The Merz came with all that, I got some Campy brakes to work, eventually changed to 24T granny for Crater Lake and never went back, too late now, all good.

It looks like you're right. I thought I had a trick up my sleeve, but it turns out it won't work with the parts I have available to me. I've had success in the past transplanting the center bolt from a Tektro dual pivot brake to a Potenza brake.



(Yes, I know those pads are backward -- I converted a rear brake to a front and this was just the test fit.)

I have a pair of Tektro R538 nutted brakes and a pair of latest generation Centaur dual pivots. I tried the transplant with these, but the threading is different. The eBay seller who has the longer bolts says Tektro used two different threadings, and the smaller one (M6xM7x73mm, which I think is probably what I need) is out of stock.

Oh well, the Tektros are good brakes and won't look bad on the bike. I've also got a pair of nutted Miches if I decide I absolutely have to stay Italian. I think the Tektros are better brakes, but I might test the threading of the center bolt on the Miches to see if that matches the Centaur.

You can't keep a good man (or me) down! Reports of my trick's demise were greatly exaggerated. The center bolt from the Miches was compatible.
