which stretch is that? i've only ridden that series of MUPs a couple times, and the parts where one might want to hammer it always seem pretty crowded and unsafe/unsuitable for anything other than a leisure cruise. especially the san andreas trail section from a bit south of the trailhead to the dam, and then again towards the southern end of sawyer camp. it's not necessarily crazy crowded like the two MUPs i'll willingly ride on (crissy field and sausalito-mill valley) but the combination of people, strollers, dogs, cyclists, and sharp turns and rollers seems especially dangerous!

This is the new section. The gate is South of the Dam. It circumvents the climb up to Bunker Hill and the curvy part of Skyline between there and the straight bit that leads to the traffic light at 92. It's not much walked, because getting to it from where everyone parks on Skyline or Crystal Springs is a bit of an uphill jog. BUT, as you can see, it's very pretty. I think I encountered maybe 5 or 6 couples or small families on either side of the path in the ~ 1 mile length.

I tend to do the climb to Bunker Hill and the descent on the outbound leg of my Sunday rides, but I have been taking that path a lot. Mostly, every time I'm headed North and there's no cars going to kill me from either direction. It's easier than the climb to Bunker Hill and since they put the 3-way stop at the end of the 280S offramp, you can't just build up speed from the top of the hill.
They widened Skyline just a bit through the twisty section South of Bunker Hill, which is nice, but more important if you're climbing the twisties rather than descending them - I usually take that descent at 30-35 mph, so I take the lane.

Had a nice couple of rides over the weekend. On Saturday I rode solo up to Lake Desolation, it’s about 900 feet up over a few miles. Held my best power over that climb ever, but was a full minute off of my PR, it was super windy so I’ll blame that.
Yesterday went with a group I join sometimes up the Helderberg escarpment. Had a decent climb (1100 over 3 miles) and some fun descending. Was definitely cooked by the end as a result of two days in a row really pushing. All in all it was fun.
No work this week, gonna try to get a couple of centuries in and drive up to Placid on Friday to do Whiteface- well see

I rode out with my tourist cyclist yesterday, an hour or so, and then back by myself. He was from Sweden. The one here now is from South Korea. Neither of them are ready for our oppressive summer heat and humidity. But they are cyclists. So they're toughing it out.

I was talking about my broken cable curse on today's ride, and one my my friends told me I should just get what he has.
He has a bike with SRAM eTap, and yes it is caliper brake supported. I suppose I could do this, but it seems effing stupid to pay three thousand dollars and get a bunch of battery headaches to solve my fairly simple problem.

againIn other news, I have an aphthous ulcer from a bitten lip that's made my last three days miserable. I get a little relief from ibuprofen, topical steroids, peroxide, and hyaluronic acid gel, but holy cow does it hurt. I suspect what it really wants is for me to take a few days off the bike. What do you do for your patients?

As expected, the RD cable was frayed inside the shifter. I am angry and disappointed. This happened to me on BOTH 6700 equipped bikes, I had figured the newer R8000 would give better cable life but apparently not. This has happened to me SO MANY TIMES that I am starting to think this is not necessarily a design defect by Shimano but user error and/or user over-use. The area I ride in certainly is quite rolling, so I do shift the RD quite frequently.

I know going electronic would solve the problem, but reminder that my bike is set up for rim brakes and external cables, and the latest generation wireless shifting from Shimano and SRAM do not support this, I believe....plus I am thrifty and don't feel like coughing up $3K for a new groupset (the R8000 full groupset was $1K).

I know for a fact I mentioned that that happened to my R8000. Shimano wants you to go Di2 or pre-emptively swap the cables. Yes it's a cop-out on their part but SRAM comes with bigger issues.
I was meaning to go Ekar at the end. Had it all planned with a shop in Boulder to do the work.

Battery chewing and missed shifts, primarily. Enough reports that I'd never be willing to switch. Even DCR started one of his trainer review videos with a sudden exclamation that the shifter batteries are always dying.

I do assume that comes with all the climbing you do. However, I'd love to hear Shimano say "you're shifting it wrong" or "you're really only supposed to shift X times per hour". That would play really well.
