25 miles Sunday, to and from the hospice to check on my mom. She's actually improving a bit, although not out of the woods. The docs didn't think she'd make it through the weekend and had removed her feeding tube. But Sunday she was more alert, following movement, seeming to recognize some familiar people, regaining some muscle tone instead of being limp and inert, and her breathing was less labored and spasmodic. We are cautiously optimistic.

I'm mostly glad she's getting such good care. I was her home caregiver for 11 years, as I'd done for my grandparents 10 years apart, but I've had some serious health issues myself this year and was hit by a car in the spring, so it's a relief to see that her needs are being met with professionalism and compassion. That wasn't the case when we tried to rely on in-home nurses and aides, which is why I took over the in-home chores.

Not today, but yesterday I once again participated in the New York Marathon as one of the cycling ******* for the elite wheelchair athletes who race the course before the runners. Our duties are to ride ahead of & on either side of these wheelchair racers to ensure that pedestrians do not step in front of the athletes. The course is closed to traffic, but because the (foot) race hasn't "officially" started folks don't take the barriers quite so seriously. So we're out there blowing whistles and screaming at idiots and essentially clearing a path for the racers. Truly an honor to be able to participate, and a great way to see NYC.

Not too many unfortunately. We were discouraged from taking selfies or photographing the athletes ourselves. My wife took this shot of the cycle ******* lined up on the Brooklyn side of the Verrazano Bridge waiting for the racers to arrive from Staten Island where we would hook up with them:

Haven't been posting in a few weeks. Since last post, I've been doing my usual 40 mile daily rides with a few 60 mile rides thrown in. Did my 5th, annual cross Florida ride two weekends ago. That was a 225 mile ride. Had a pretty good crash on the first day but I did finish the ride. Didn't start to feel the affects of the crash until Monday. Haven't ridden since then until this morning. Did a slow and easy 25 miles but started having some issues with the injured knee around mile 18. Looks like another day off the bike tomorrow.

Very cool Bob. I always wondered about the bicycle *******. Good for you, I'm sure it was fun and a good service for the athletes.

19 miles as a bike commuter today. Around 50 all day - kinda windy but that was more of a tailwind on the ride in and kicked up while I was at work and then, thankfully, died down for the trip home.

Oh, I'm behind.

Highlights: Rode 64.35 miles on my 64th birthday -- it wasn't pretty but I managed and yeah, take that, 64!

I've done some short rides, trying to them in around work and my latest involvement in founding a local non-profit (to be).

Today I took my car for service, and rode 25+ miles on the back side of Napa...the vineyards are turning color, some trees are as well. The sun was bright, the sky was blue, and drivers yielded to me, even when they didn't have to, a plus any day. Definitely a ride for "smiles per mile," to quote some old guy on this forum.

I had a weird ride Friday night. I didn't really feel like riding -- the first time that's happened to me, I swear! -- but I needed to go, it had been a few days, gotta keep the metabolism spun up, weather clear and cool, all green on the life status board, so I went anyway. I had no ambition, it was just half-hearted, slackadaisical. No drive. Every time I closed in on one of the hills I'd say nah, I'm not gonna do that, I'm just gonna walk it, I don't feel like pushing. But here's the weird thing. I just kept riding. My head was still saying nah, my heart was off sulking in its room somewhere, but my body knew what to do, and up it went. I have habits now, apparently, and the pedaling habit took me up and over. Same at the big climb that ends all my rides, uphill along the highway to the mountain, then the super-steep cut from the highway up into the neighborhood, then the final climb up my street to my driveway. The whole time I was like hell no I'm not doing that, yet, I never managed to get off the bike, and up I went, because my body now knows the moves. About 15 after-dark miles.

So Monday night I baked in some motivation, some urgency. We had thunderstorms coming through, high winds expected, tornado watch across the region. I kept checking the forecast until two hours before the storm, then set off on a two hour ride. Finished in an hour and 40. A little danger, a little daring, the feeling of riding under the overhang of a breaking wave, and a 22mph tailwind on the return did the job. That was the ride I was looking for.

Got a 33 mile solo ride in before work today. Started in complete darkness, sun started to come up as I was around mile 5 or 6. When I got to mile 15 I took a ~2 mile detour through the woods just because it looked so gorgeous with the sun streaming in through the trees:

Put some miles in on a very smokey day here in the Bay Area due to the Butte fire up north. The only thing I like about smokey days is the nice filter it plays for photos:

Went out planing on doing a long ride, but I stopped by my daughter's house and when I left I forgot my helmet. I had my beanie cap on and it feels like I have my helmet on wearing it. I got out 5 miles and was speeding down a long hill when the wind started to blow my cap off when I realized I didn't have a helmet. I rode to the bottom of the hill, a little slower than I usually do, then turned around.

I have Reynauds Syndrome so I bought a pair of these, ...https://firedupx.com/collections/hea...n-glove-liners that's only $136.50 US . If my hands get even slightly cold they are very painful and even soaking them in hot water won't relive the pain. They arrived yesterday and I took then out for a test ride, but the weather never got below 55°F and I was sweating enough without them. From the 10 day weather forecast it looks like it will be a few weeks before I need them. 25 miles, but it was a very nice day.

Just finished a quick 7 miles (the Reverse Library Loop) to make sure I still know how to dress for the cold and to test a new helmet light mounting scheme. Didn't manage to crack freezing, only 34F, but still my coldest yet this season. No cars = the best ride.

Those sound great, well worth it, I hope they work out.

Tried for a 60 mile ride with my buddy Frankie, this morning, but only finished 41 of those miles. Knee started to complain so I gave in. Getting injured after 70 takes way too long to heal.

I managed to get in a approximately 12 miles today with my wife. She's new to road cycling and today was her 3rd ( I think ) ride on her new Trek Checkpoint. It was great to be out on the road with her even if it was rather cold... mid 40's.

28 miles Saturday night, first outdoor ride since last weekend's ride to visit my mom in hospice. She didn't make it and died Thursday. In a sense I'm relieved she's no longer trapped in that unresponsive, painful body. She was a good friend as well as my mom and I'll miss her dearly. I took a few days off but realized I was moping around the house, fretting over writing her obituary and other final paperwork. Realized it was the Marine Corps Birthday so I rode to a friend's brew pub to shake off the cobwebs and rejoin the living. Gonna take a couple of rides to get accustomed to the chilly weather, but it'll be fine.

I was the only attendee at the Adventure Cycling/Bike Texas gathering in Dallas yesterday to actually ride a bicycle to the meeting, a fact I found amusing.
