Wouldn't be caught dead wearing a helmet with a visor.

Newest helmet a GIRO MIPS had one. Tried it for awhile in sunny SoCal but I did not think it was long or wide enough to make a difference unlike a full MTB helmet.

I like a visor for sun shading and for wind blocking, but I also need to see down the road. MTB helmets usually come with a visor, but I usually have road helmets like Giro Pneumo or better, with no added visor. A few years ago I put a baseball cap under the helmet, but I had to crane my neck up too much. I changed to an old Cinelli cycling cap, made of thin buckrum, it seems, and that is just about perfect. The small brim adds enough sun and wind protection, and it lets me wear the helmet positioned for (at least what Giro says ) is the best position for impact protection. Having had a crash a few years back which crimped my frame and splintered my old Giro, I really want the helmet fastened in the right place.

For protecting your scalp against UV, don't you need a thin cap with UVA and UVB protection? A eye visor isn't enough. I'm concerned about UV as well, especially with thinning hair. A few dozen follicles doesn't block much sun!

I see that a lot of folks are using the word visor for both causing some minor confusion.
Maybe the word "brim" would be more specific?

Don't need the cap until I lose more hair!

Could not agree more. If you are unfortunate to have had a dermatologist cutting on you you will protect every way you reasonably can.

Not a good idea to make generalizations or compare what a racer does or does not wear for other riders whose income is not derived from riding a bike. On a road bike I need to see the road ahead to avoid obstacles or broken glass or ground squirrels and most road helmets will block my vision when I am riding and I have had to cut the front edge of the helmet out of the way. Newer designs seem to be much better.

I wear a brimless cap under the helmet when it is ultra sunny to protect my head from UV rays as my helmets have large slits for better airflow and trust me that a sunburned scalp is quite uncomfortable and best avoided.

I hope your oncologist would agree! My dermatologist absolutely does not.

I wear prescription tri-focals all the time and I find that wearing a visor keeps the sun from reflecting off my forehead onto the inside of my glasses, eliminating glare. I am a road cyclist but ride in a mostly upright position, on all my bikes the saddle is no more than 1" higher than the handlebar.

Never on a helmet for use on pavement but a MTB one for trail riding is a different situation. Even with helmets I have owned without a visor I have often needed to trim the front foam so it did not interere with my ability to watch the road ahead and avoid problems.

I only use a visor on my mountain bike. MTB helmets come with visors. I wouldn't be able to see the road if I used one on my road bikes.

As mentioned if the light gets dim, reverse the visor to the "up position", the same magnets will hold it out of the way.
I'd call that more of a face shield than a visor.

A visor, to me, is more like a brim of a baseball cap. - it sticks straight out

I wear a short brim cycling cap under my helmet, so not necessary.
Plus I ride in the drops a lot. It would get in the way.

Visors/Brims on 2 of my helmets, no visor on 2. I ecently bought a Bell Hub - I LOVE this helmet ! Fit is awesome, Great ventilation, slightly higher forehead (for me)
a BUILT-IN Brim, similar to a cycling cap - great part is the brim be in an 'UP' position, so it's not obstructing in any way; and can be flipped down to provide the benefits of a cycling cap brim.
BUT it built in as part of the forehead pad, so not complete over the head. Helmet has super ventilation and fits nicely close to the head.

Bell Hub Helmet

I use the Helmets with visors/brims on rides when riding later in afternoon... I live in the very western area of the Santa Barbara Valley - which is east/west oriented. So, invariably the return leg of almost all of my rides are at least 6 miles facing directly into the sun, when it's low on the horizon.
Visibility is completely zero for oncoming and anything in the roadway ahead, if you can't tilt your helmet and brim down far enough to block sun. A helmet without a brim/visor asbolutely does NOT work for this issue.
The Bell Hub is a great addition to my Helmet quiver, and will likely become the most used.
Ride On
