Well probably the best candidate! If my rudimentary Latin serves, the motto is “Nothing without Pain”. I think I’d prefer “Something with maybe a little passing discomfort”.

I was going to suggest Red Biciclette as a candidate although I thought it was a “meh” wine and came across this story when I looked for a picture. Apparently it was labeled as Pinot noir but had little to none of this actual grape in it.

Another candidate would be any wine made from Abbey Ridge grapes, an Oregon vineyard owned by long time rider well known in the PNW classic bike community.

I’m a 20+ year wine industry professional and I remember well when Red Biciclette was launched. Part of the story that I came across was that the producing winery sent their marketing team to the South of France for a number of weeks in order to fully immerse themselves in the French wine culture. At the time, I was working on a fashion concept / partnership brand and I asked my boss if I could go to Milan for a few moths in order to understand the Italian fashion lifestyle. The discussion didn’t go well….

On the Gaiole bottle in the picture, Spaghetti Legs I think your translation is spot on. It was a long day on the bike, and the post ride beverages really helped ease a lot of discomfort! I decided to save this one to enjoy at home though, we drank one of the bottles in our rider gift box after the ride.

I first tried Eroica a few years ago (yes the name influenced my purchase) and I really like it, it has become one of my favorite Rieslings.

Francesco Moser and family own a winery.

I've been a beer guy for a long time, but the gut said enough of that early this year, and the hard stuff is a bit more no thanks (though the idea and romanticism is always there). So wine it is, and almost exclusively red. I keep the price point at or just below a craft six-pack as I figure that's only 'fair' Serves me well. Pinot Noir, Malbec, or a good Syrah. I miss a good beer, especially with a burger or fish-n-chips or....a number of things (totally no nostalgia at play here). I don't miss feeling crummy a number of hours later. A little less country and a bit more classical. Maybe it makes sense with all the Dura-Ace I have on my (two) bikes. [sips red blend as he writes this..]

I've been free of spirits for a good decade. I do however still favor Champagne and Burgundy.
And like a Mad Dog Burgundy Univega with a piggy on my back that I can't shake.

Since I like to poke the bear…..I think most Chiantis are….unpleasant. (I used to be an Italian wine buyer FWIW).

My taste in bikes is quite pedestrian but when it comes to wine I’m a bit more discriminating. Some cheap wine is perfectly fine as Tuesday night wine but when I’m out for a decent dinner I’ll step it up a few notches.

I’m just babbling but an appropriate C&V wine? Let’s see, it needs to work well but generally not too expensive. A pretty label helps but isn't necessary. To many, a deep history helps but many couldn’t give a toss since every product has a sweet spot in its history. Also, if something was/is good it’s always good. My highly biased vote goes for the previously mentioned Aglianico or a well constructed Barbera. Campagnolo aficionados may lean towards a Barolo, Barbaresco or Brunello and Francophiles might lean towards a Côte du Rhone.

I think way too much about stuff like this…

Speaking of Grahm, Bonny Doon must have the coolest wine label ever: Le Cigare Volant (not C&V though, unless you include farm carts)

(Cigare, of course, is inspired by Chateauneuf-du-Pape from the Rhone Valley. CdP rather famously enacted a ban on UFOs (or flying cigars, as they called them) in the AOC in 1954, threatening impoundment of any caught in the area. As of a few years ago, there are no plans to lift the ban.)

I don’t buy wine because all the fuss surrounding it makes it feel too special to drink except on a special occasion so it sits around in my house for years.

I know that’s silly.

French and Italian Wines

One of my favorite wine posters - the French celebration of the Italian wine harvest...

The advantage of those inexpensive wines is they taste good - BOTH WAYS!
That does not agree with my memory of Mad Dog. Tolerable going down, quite unpleasant flavor coming back up. Not that that stopped me from repeating the process regularly in my younger days.

Cribari - The Gentile Journey - AKA "CRYBABY"

Posters like this where pasted on bus stops and buses all over NYC back in the late 60's. Note the picture of the Zig Zag Man leaning up against the tree.

Cribari was a triumph of marketing. Changed true swill into a cultural icon among the youth back then...

BTW, most of the wines coming out of the Modesto - Fresno corridor are owned by E & J Gallo!

Cannot intake alcohol due to PD meds, and I’m clumsy enough without imbibing and the leg tremors 🥴

Not around as far as I know now, but the old Strawberry Hill - Boones Farm cheapies would make Verktyg’s list complete for the Deep South, circa1972-1979. Not as cultured as MD 20-20, but effective enough to have gotten many a southern boy in a heap of trouble back in the day.

No boxed or bag wines mentioned, thank the Good Lord😉 I always preferred Scotch or beer pre-PD days.

Bill
