What the difference between a 18 teeth freewheel & a 16 freewheel
Neither is 'better' but a 16t freewheel will make it harder to pedal at low speeds, but you will be able to ride faster and keep up speed when your going faster. You'll probably have to shorten your chain though.
An 18t will be easier to pedal (only slightly) but you won't be able to ride as fast. Won't make too much difference though.

Forget the boring old double rainbows we now have double Zombie threading. The dudes first post and only post in the forum was to zombie a thread and literally say nothing that needed to be said.

Just because the OP may not look at this doesn't mean tons of people who won't respond or even sign up for an account can't look at the info here.

I'm guessing a lot of people can't think outside the box and realize that people come here to look at the thread for information. I didn't realize that this info had a shelf life.

I'm guessing that anyone who registers to comment on an old thread about gearing without actually reading those things first is more interested in their own opinions than actually helping people.

I ride a 42/17, and tried a 42/16 also, on the flat stretches I like the 16, but it makes the hills tough for me. If my area was all flat riding, I'd go with the 16 tooth cog. But as everyone already stated, there are so many variables (terrain, level of fitness, desired speed, etc...) free wheels are cheap, try both.

I ride 53/22 and can ride 22mph and climb up to 1/2 mile 10% grade hills. The hills are a challenge but it can be done. To go fast you need to be able to spin around 125 and not bounce. Oh and I ride SS I don't care for the FG.
OOps didn't notice how old this was.

Should I watch Premium Rush? Never seen it, and I know what it's going to be. But I'm very forgiving when it comes to action movies. Is it even a decent drink-a-bunch-of-cheap-beer flick?

Thanks guys!
i am converting to singlespeed and have no knowledge on the number of teeth on a freewheel and how it affects the ride...so can you help me out by giving me advice on what each number of teeth(16, 17 , 18) would be meant for and why one more or one less tooth would make much of a difference
It’s been a big help. Cheers!

They haven't changed how math works in the past five years, and even the physics of mechanical advantage, i.e., leverage have not changed since 2015. So this advice and discussion from years past is still relevant. Kudos to MGSH for looking up the existing thread instead of reposting the same question.

As a related footnote, I was reading about my White freewheel and White mentions that a 1/8 chain doesn't fully seat on the 16T cog they make and may contribute to rapid chain wear. 3/32 chain is ok. My White 16 sits in its little box since then.
I've got an incremental range of whites 16-23, sometimes I feel like a spin, sometimes I feel like a mash

On the subject of zombies and zombie threads, here's my opinion for what it's worth, which probably ain't much.
Some members hate when old threads are resurrected. I've often been puzzled by this. What is the use of the search function if not to find old information, and if you have something to add to the discussion, then why not? Resurrecting good threads can help people who otherwise would never have seen the original topic. And I find it interesting to see all of the user names that are usually no longer with us. Either they've moved on altogether or maybe just moved to other areas of the forum, who knows?
Anyway, I say bring back good threads. Why create new ones that cover already-trodden ground. Why have 1,000 topics titled "what's the best gear ratio for hilly city riding"? Or "how many skid patches with XXX combo"? If the information doesn't change, maybe one thread on that topic's enough?
Please don't take this as a lecture, just a point of view. I'm enjoying my coffee and perusing the forum and was just motivated to speak up.
Find somewhere fun to ride this weekend. Talking about bikes is fun, but riding them is even better!
