Hello from VA

Hey! I’ve been reading this forum for the past two years but never needed to post before. Now I do, so I created a profile.

I’m looking forward to more of the great experience on this forum!

Thanks!
Cameron

Welcome Cameron. I used to live in NoVa but was in Newport News often for work and went on our boat from Solomons. Great area for riding.

Thanks! Looking forward to some exploring!

I was near Solomons a few years ago, too. Nice area up there but not much in the way of hills.

Unfortunately, no. Never heard of them. What are the full names?

C&O Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage - goes from DC to Pittsburgh. I did the GAP section last summer, it was great! I hear the C&O portion is a little rougher but would love to try it.

I was looking at this and thought maybe I should add some details, haha!

I’ve run my entire life, somewhat because I enjoy it, somewhat because I have to stay in shape for work, and somewhat because I like drinking good beer and eating good food. In recent years I’ve been having back and knee pain that’s sidelined my running for days to weeks at a time.

After my last big back spasm, I pulled out my old mountain bike and started riding that around town in the mornings for a workout. A buddy of mine found out and asked if I wanted to ride with him so we linked up one morning: me on my full suspension mountain bike and him on a carbon Trek. We rode 18 miles that day, which more than doubled what I had been doing up to that point. After the ride he offered to loan me his old starter bike, a Trek 1.2 which ended up putting almost 1,000 miles on before I got my own bike.

I’ve got a Trek 2.3 now that I’ve put a good number of miles on. I’m not a racer, but I love trying to grab Strava KOMs. My longest single ride was 66 miles, though I tend to put in 20-40 miles per ride usually. That mostly depends on how much time I have to ride.

We recently moved from AL, where winter is more of a mild inconvenience, so I picked up a Kickr to help me stay on the bike in the VA winter. I’ve only ridden it a few times so far but I like it. It’s definitely harder to do long distances on the trainer but I’m not 100% sure why.

I’ve got a full time job and two kids under the age of 3, so I’m limited on my ability to head out and do big rides, But I’m looking forward to exploring at least my local corner of VA on two wheels come spring!
