Undrilled rims

Hi everybody. Call me a brave or stupid, but I want to try building my own wheels with my own spoke layout. That said, I am looking for undrilled rims (probably cheap ones for the first go around). Does anyone know where I can go to find undrilled rims?

Thanks!

Direct from the manufacturers. you have to get it before they put it in the drilling machine.

Any manufactures that you recommend? Or are you just suggesting I go to Mavic, Shimano, Bontrager, etc?

I have heard of custom drilled Velocity rims although I couldn't find anything about them on their website.

I've seen them from Araya.
What size are you looking for?

Unless you've got the press and dies for swaging over the lips of the eyelets you'll want to pick a type of rim that doesn't normally come with eyelets as well. That would be many or most of the deep section rims from what I've seen.

Thanks for the feedback. I've emailed several of the companies mentioned above. I also email the Chinese guys who said the rims came as pictured. Maybe I'll try them again though, see if I can get someone less by the book to respond.

If all else fails get a rim with the minimum number of holes (no eyelets) and drill your pattern. I doubt that you will have anything that has not been done. The bicycle wheel is over 120 years old. The primary changes have been in the evolution of materials.

The cheapest way to buy the parts to lace up an Ultegra/Open Pro wheelset is to buy a prebuilt wheelset to disassemble. Once you go outside of the normal distribution channels I doubt it's going to be cheap.

The other issue is Aluminum will form stress risers if the drilling isn't done well eventually breaking out the spoke head usually at the most inopportune time ... downhill or 100 miles from home. Unless you are a skilled machinest with the proper tools and some recommendation from the rim supplier plan on keeping the wheels you build for wall art and interesting conversational pieces. Good luck.

I've almost been talked out of trying this

Worst care scenario, as you said, I'll have wall art.

At one time Sun would fill custom orders... should see if there are any 625's kicking around at the shop.

These were ordered for high pressure 622 clincher tyre applications and work quite well as the extra few mm does not make for an overly difficult fit and creates a very solid bead seat that can handle 150-160 psi.

Also have a 36 inch rim...
