I had to go to the market today. I drove. Usually I don't put on mask until I get there and am about to go in. Today, I put it on as soon as I left the house. It probably didn't help a lot with the quality of the air I was breathing, but at least it didn't taste as bad.

Not on your life, anyone rolling the dice with air quality AND COVID are really not paying attention, IMHO.

The air quality is good in north coastal San Diego County, but we are one of the fortunate pockets right now, and much depends on wind direction. My wife's sister reports dreadful air quality in the east San Francisco Bay area (Oakland).

A lot of places with PM2.5 in the 500s, out there. Heck, that's worse than Mumbai, Mexico City, Beijing and a handful of other typically horribly-polluted spots.

Salem, OR @ AirNow.gov = PM2.5 532, as of a couple of hours ago.

USA national map @ EPA.gov: click. Spokane, Portland, Salem, Medford, north of Lake Tahoe ... lots of nasty spots for being outdoors, today.

(Thankfully, AQI is about 30, where I live, not along the western states. Practically clean air, today.)

Well, I’ve decided to give it a go! I am going to ride and if it is too bad I will pull the ripcord and call my wife, but just can’t go more than a week or so without pedaling. I haven’t smelled smoke and it is overcast. Yesterday evening I went outside for a while and no wind and cool temps my kind of weather. Besides I exit my house through the garage and I just can’t walk by that beautiful orange Medici with its new pantographed bits on it one more time. It has been on the stand since I swapped everything out a week ago. So, today I ride! Yay

I was planning to ride all week and ended up only riding on Thursday when the AQI in Seattle was fair in the AM since then it has gone critical with very unhealthy readings every day. It sucks but I am not threatened by fires and haven't lost a home. My older brother is in Clackamas county outside of Portland and has been in pre evac (be ready to leave) status since Friday. At 6 am on Sunday AQI in Seattle is 181..... sigh, I will not be taking rides on decent AQI days for granted anymore!

my ride Thursday AM

We had a break in the air quality last Sunday so I did a pretty big ride then. However, it's been bad since then so the bikes have stayed inside. Today we seem to getting a possible reprieve but the AQI is still above 100. Planning to work on indoor honey-dos today. The weather forecast indicates some wind (it's been very still so the smoke has not been moving) so perhaps we'll get some air from offshore. That said, there's still an awful lot of smoke out over the ocean.

I agree with this. I replaced our HVAC filter yesterday and only left the fan running. It helped remove the smoke smell from inside our home without having to run the cooling. Its nice right now in SoCal not too hot.

PM2.5 at 627, hm? Dang. That is bad.

Can't imagine what allergy sufferers and others with impaired lung function are dealing with, right now.

Senseless in Seattle

I’m in Seattle and I’ve ridden about 90 miles the last three days - wearing a 3M n95 mask and to be honest I haven’t even felt any difficulties- I have mild allergy related asthma, but my route may be helping- basically across the 520 floating bridge onto burke Gilman and up through Golden Gardens and down to Esplanade/blue ridge. There’s been cool air coming in from the pacific each day that might be helping and yesterday and today it was almost cold - thanks to combination of pressure and obscuring of the sun by smoke.

I don’t recommend it but it’s been ok in my experience- although I’ve never seen the trail so deserted. Indeed the premier sunset viewing spot at the top of golden gardens was literally empty except for me and one of the poor bastards who lives there and normally has dozens of people sitting outside his house or making out as the sun goes down.

I snapped some cool pics and video of a beaver I’ll post when my privileges/post count kicks in.

I rode 71km yesterday around Vancouver, BC and it looked a little hazy but it seemed okay. My nose and throat did not react as they do when I am around a campfire. Today it smells more like smoke, and I have things to do inside, so I am undecided about riding later. No car available, so any travel will be on a steel pony.

I was stupid enough to try yesterday. Didn't look at the air quality reports first. It didn't seem that bad where I live. I got out of my car and, ack, smokey. Rode maybe 6 or 7 miles with an N95 mask, and turned around. The mask did seem to get block most of the smoke, but it still was evident that it was a stupid idea. Hopefully next weekend is better.

In the SFBay area, and I'm not riding. I learned my lesson on 8/29, riding 5+ hours in AQI 170-150's. No headache, but sore throat and snotty.

Very sad. I’d encourage everyone to limit your exposure. Remember that chronic respiratory and cardiovascular conditions develop over time, so it’s about protecting your health both today and tomorrow. Wishing the best for the west.

Well , I got back a couple of hours ago. I had a great ride, about 35 miles, it was cool and no wind. No smoke or ash in our area. We are only 18 miles from the beach and seem to be in a bit of clear air . I will enjoy it for as long as it is here. I am glad I got to ride , we actually had some blue sky. Most of the bad air was in Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks area.

I did about 25 miles this morning. Tried to keep the effort level down,
Where I am it seems less smoky in the early morning but really gets thick as the day goes on.
At it's best it's still unhealthy.

2020 really needs a do-over.

Nope. Last time I rode was last Sunday. So, a whole week already. Today air quality is in the 300s range, so that's a definite nope. It's mostly been very unhealthy to hazardous all week. The first thing you smell when opening a door to the outside is smoke. I can barely see the hill about 1 mile away. Funny, this morning I woke up to 100% humidity, so foggy I could barely see the huge sequoia trees just 30 yards from the house. That took a little bit to figure out.

Feeling very fortunate myself, family and friends are not directly impacted by the fires. It's all on the other side of the valley from us. Saw more vehicles of evacuees arrived at the fairgrounds yesterday, that was fairly sobering.

Today was another day and while I planned on a early morning ride after a night of on shore breeze, I spent the early morning preparing my Clunker Challenge Stumpy for some MUP aggravation. I wasn't disappointed as quite a few other reckless people were out there.

35/100 k done with an out and back flat MUP.

I did some errands on my urban fixie... a couple of hours worth of riding... it was enough to convince me that was enough.

My eyes and throat are sore, my nose is runny, and my teeth feel dirty.

I was going to go this afternoon, but thought better of it. I hope next weekend is better.

I have noticed a little bit of throat irritation and a bit of a blech taste in my mouth most of the time. To think that I could have been enjoying these sensations all my adult life through the simple expedient of setting tobacco on fire and sucking the smoke into my lungs.
