Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need app to temporarily replace Garmin

I'm fine leaving the phone in my pocket and not seeing the data until I get home, but would like to record it. I have a chest strap and power meter that does not have BT, and a Samsung phone with an ANT+ antenna. My Garmin died, they're sending me a replacement, I only need a short term solution. Can anybody recommend one?

Why not use Strava or RideWithGPS?

Can you deal with a few days of recording rides, but not power/HR?

The last I heard was that Strava had turned off the ability to use sensors when recording through their app. I don't know if that's changed. What I'm looking for is something that will record power and heart rate data.

The way I feel about this, there isn't much value in having a recording of a week or so of ride data if power isn't included. I can just enter manual workouts in Connect saying I went for a ride. I've come up with some loops I enjoy and know the mileage on. The ability to record power output, and HR to a lesser extent, is what's important to me. GPS trace is just icing on the cake.

The Wahoo fitness app I think accepts both HR and power. IIRC I used it for a week while my Elemnt was shipping back and getting a new one for a warranty thing that happened.

A handful of years ago, I looked in to phones and apps that were ANT+ compatible. IIRC, there were only a few Sony handsets at the time, and a couple of apps. ANT+ hasn't exactly taken off since, with BT pushing their energy consumption way down, so I would be shocked if any apps still had connectivity.

Those seven words don't really make it better.

"I'm not recommending you do this, but here's a recommendation".

???

How is an option precluded by morals an option?

That is, why even mention it as an option if you don’t think it’s an option?

Anyway, he should just steal it. That would let him keep it. /s

When I needed to replace my cycling computer temporary I used Jepster. Works pretty well. Detects all the sensors. Has auto start and pause.

1. Buy a Garmin Edge 130+ (or 130 on sale) as a backup.

2. Use it while the main one is being repaired.

3. Keep it if it suits your purpose as a backup/spare, return it if it does not and to do so is consistent with the retailer's return policy, or sell it as gently used.

I was in a similar situation a year or so ago and thought I'd try IpBike ANT+, but then a friend loaned me his old Garmin 500 for a week so I never had to find out if IpBike would have worked.

But if you want it, Forrest, just let me know.

Edit: I was hoping it was sitting in my mailbox, but noooo. If an Edge 130 that only holds charge for 3 or 4 hours would work, I could send it now. If the battery ever shows up, you are welcome to both.

The REI scheme is easily workable (so it's actually an option even if you say you aren't recommending it). Mentioning REI is also oddly specific. So, even if you were kidding, you ended-up giving practical advice.

Stealing one isn't an option (the risk is way too high). You were supposed to realize that. The /s was there to make that realization more likely.

There are a lot of readers of these threads. It seems unlikely that Forrest would do it.

Doing things like the REI scheme is something a fair number of people are "kind of OK with" (something you might not expect).
