Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't think there is a difference with sram. But you never know. My white tarmac had all 10 speed , 1st generation Exogram Red, until I cracked the crankset. I replaced it with Red 22, which is 11 speed. Never adjusted the derailluer, it just worked.

one sight that never gets old. Line up the old and new chain next to each other. See how much longer the old one is. I've had them over a link longer. It's crazy

I had a hard time trying to get any information about Campagnolo and what is compatible with what. The 11s crank works, I just hope it lasts.

So I installed my chain. It’s the Ultegra level CN-HG701-11. From what I can tell the chain is legit but the quick link may not be. The other quick links have an arrow on them but all of mine do not.

Thoughts?

Phooey.

I have 3 of these chains from two different sellers and they all appear to be the same.

Nope. The one I replaced is Dura-Ace. I might reuse that quick link until I can get a legit new one.

Nope. That quick link is not legit. I have three CN-HG701-11 chains and the quick link looks like this (ignore the color in the photo, they are silver):

Btw, $48 for a pair of HG701-11 might be a clue. Trustworthy sites are wanting $35-45 for one.

Speaking from experience with counterfeit chains, I’d start carrying a chain tool with me. Mine would have a side plate give away, not at the QL. The QL would hold and the only fix on the road is a chain breaker.

Yeah, it's definitely counterfeit. All three I got from ScamBay (two different sellers) are.

Sigh.

I gave up buying any component parts from eBay or Amazon. As much as I hate to say it, @datlas, but I wouldn't trust those chains. I've had three chains that pulled the side plates out on a ride, two were SRAM and one Shimano. Looking back, I had other weird chain failures and I don't doubt that they were fake, too.

Had what I think must have been a fake KMC recently. It worked okay, but was so noisy I trashed it.

Yeah, I agree. I plan to swing by the LBS on my way home from work today and buy an 11 speed chain. If they don't have Shimano, is KMC the next best choice?? SRAM??

Who makes the best chains? Should I start a thread??

Do you have any recourse against the scam sellers?
