Very extremely cool bike, but looking at those knobbies, you might get more appreciation on the Vintage Mountain Bikes thread.

(Nevermind)

Just an update on my late 80s RockHopper. I’ve been running it single speed since last August, and recently I switched from the longer Nitto stem adapter to a cheap, short stem adapter because I’m running the bars lower.

Also, I noticed that since a year ago, I switched to black bar tape and grips.

yes I found a set of decals from England (probably not originals) and sandblasted the frame and fork, painted it white, did the decals first, then the splatter, then 2 coats of 2 part clear satin epoxy. The tires were the only brand new ones I had so I thought just for now, but then I rode it a few times and I have to admit, I like the feel.

Was the frame already spaced properly for the hub, or did you have to cold set it? It's something I've been considering

Yeah I painted it. Reproduction decal set so I don't know how accurate the color is. It's getting some Schwalbe Marathon tires but I really like the way the red wall knobbier look on there.

It was a piece of cake - no cold setting involved. I'd say, do it!

Routing the shift cable will take some thought. In the end, it was really pretty easy to do and an 8 speed IGH is a commuter's dream.

Depends on where they were in the price level, some of the lower end stuff stayed with quill stems, otherwise from '94 on most of the products went to threadless. By '97 it was most everything.

What is the shifter situation on this puppy? I can't really see from the photo angle.

There is a Shimano thumb shifter mounted beneath the handlebars. The shifter was designed for this location, as the thumb-actuated lever is exactly where you'd want it while holding the grips of the bars. It has a gear indicator display easily seen by the rider.

Alternatively, a twist grip shifter is also available for use with the Alfine hub. I preferred the thumb shifter, some prefer the grip.

Great looking vintage 850 DQRider!

Nice timing on getting the boat in pic!

What river or lake in background?

Evertime I look at the pics of this bike I am blown away!

Simply extraordinary!!!

It's up there with the most beautiful and unique bikes I've seen.

My thought was would you guys take on a frame and fork to paint for someone?

Then I imagine the hours invested would make it a very expensive undertaking to do for someone else even if you took on the project.

Not a mountain bike, but a conversion for my girlfriend.

When bought..

Making it more comfy for her..

First ride..still not quite comfy for her..

Hers & His..

Just got it back yesterday. Nitto technomic, plush saddle, thumb shifters, different bars. She loves riding it more than ever! Unfortunately, I no longer have a bike to match hers.

Bridgestone MB3 Conversion to Townie

Saw several posts on this thread today, so I thought I would add my daily commute/around town bike. It fits the theme of vintage MTB to upright bar.

Very interesting.
Is there any rule of thumb on the height of the handlebar to follow?
Some of you have it under the saddle, a lot at the same level and some over the saddle.

I guess that really depends on what kind of riding you do. For the bikes in this thread, Grant Petersen's philosophy applies: grips level with or slightly above saddle height. Comfortable, in other words.

The only time the < saddle height position makes sense is in racing, when aerodynamics is a factor. Or masochism. Or posing, I suppose.

I'm solidly in the 'grip height = saddle height' camp.
