Bridgestone X0 2 vs MB2

i considering two Bridgestone Models as a "City Bike". Probably won't take long rides, and weight and speed isn't an issue

A 1987 MB, and an XO 2 from the early 90's. Price is about the same. I believe the X0 2 is scarce, MB 2's seem common.

The X 02 does not include rack and bag.

How might the handling and ride be different?

Which would you recommend and why?

Thank you\

John

Just the eye test, but they seem significantly differently sized so that might be the deciding factor (though too small can be helped by seatpost, the stem adjustment is limited...)

I am a big fan of earlier MBs and that one has an unusually cool color scheme...

Thanks for your comment on size. The MB is a 21", the XO 2 was ridden by an owner who is 5' 8" which is my height. I have not seen either.

Easy peasy— buy both, keep the one you like better.

I’m a big fan of the XO-1,2 geometry, but that MB looks really nice, and appears to be a better size fit. Also, does the MB have colour-matched stem/fork/bottle-cage?? Awesome!

Other than size

Looks like a mostly original package of parts, including the solid SunTour drivetrain (500 alpha thingy with excellent thumbies), the ST XC Power brake under the stays. Quirky yet super cool stuff. It is on my short list of bikes down the line if they come up for sale.

For what it's worth, it's my size....how much are they asking for it?

Plus, it has lugs...

I like both bikes but if forced to choose, I'd go with the MB 2. I'm a fan of Bridgestones. I own and ride both a '93 MB 1 and a '93 XO 2. They're both great bikes but I like vintage MTBs.

both bikes are in the high $200 range. All things considered which would you recommend and why?

Thanks so much,

John

Honestly have never ridden either, but the tighter stays, the lugs, the SunTour thumb-accushift drivetrain and the powerbrakes under the stays does it for me. The color coordinated scheme is very cool.

HOWEVER, At 5'8" you might be in between the two bikes' sizes. The closer fit is likely the XO-2.

And I have never seen an MB2 for sale in this area, unfortunately.

Given your height (I am 5'9"), I would try the XO-2 first and buy it if you like it. It won't last long for under $300. Then, go try the MB-2, but be prepared to find out that it is too big for you, as it looks pretty tall. I recently had a Univega MTB that was roughly the size of the green MB-2, and despite all of my fiddling, I couldn't get it to be a perfect fit and bought a different smaller MTB.

The listings are MB-2: $300, XO-2: $325

You're always gonna pay the Bridgestone Tax if you buy in the Twin Cities, but I think the XO-2 is the better value of the two choices. I think a 90's MB-2 could easily be worth what they're asking (especially one with the elegant bi-plane fork crown), but the '87 is listed in the catalog at a tanky 29.5 pounds. I also think the chain stay brake, color scheme, and black plastic pedals hurts its desirability. This is being sold by the Inver Grove Heights flipper. He tends to use tire-shine, so watch out for slippery tread. I wonder if the photo background means he has some sort of thrift store bike hook-up since he has a lot of fresh inventory.

The XO-2 has nicer components and in pearl white, it's lookin' right. I'm not crazy about the comfort "upgrades" like the suspension seatpost and stem, but it'd still be my pick. But you still have to test-ride it. I know the moustache bars disagree with some people's wrists.

If they both fit, I'd pick the X0-2 because I don't want to mess with the chain stay brakes on the MTB.

21" in MTB terms is large. It will probably be too big.
