Looking fir a Commuter bike: Trek 7.1 or Diamonback Insight 2? Recommendations?
Hi, guys,
I'm looking for an inexpensive bike for commuting and general ride-around-town stuff. I've looked at both of these bikes and they seem pretty similar. I like the Trek name, but I don't want to be sold on brand name. The Avilio derailleur on the Insight 2 is rated above the Acera on the Trek 7.1 Both are somewhat low end systems anyway, so I don't know if that makes a difference. Any opinions?

I'd look at the Trek 7.2 if you're looking at new, because you get the much much better Alpha black frame. Better platform should you get bitten by the upgrade bug later.

The two bikes are similarly equipped, so your decision should be based on feel, fit, and warranty IMHO.

Ride both. See which you like better. They're probably both made in the same factory by the same workers using roughly the same components.
If you don't know how to service your bike then consider getting one from an LBS so he can hold your hand otherwise go to parktool.com and give your bike a once-over when you get it home. I've been shocked by LBS and big box stores "mechanics" setting up a bike only to realize that the brake cartridges weren't even screwed on tight enough.

I compared the 7.2 FX and Insight 2 at the LBS, both were similarly priced and went with the DB. It felt lighter and faster than the Trek. JMHO. I still enjoy my Trek 7200FX for touring and the Insight 2 for fast sprinting. Whatever your decision both are good bikes and you can't go wrong with either. Just get out there and ride!!

Thanks, everyone, for your opinions. I wasn't sure of the quality of the DB. I was waiting for someone to say something like, 'don't ever buy a DB. Worst bike on the road.' That not being the case, I'll ride them both and see which I prefer.

I know you didn't mention it, but if one of the LBSs near you caries Jamis, take a look at the Coda. It should be priced similarly, and fall into a similar category.
I rode a Coda Sport and really liked it. Ultimately I purchased a much different bicycle, but the Coda is still high on my list of bicycles to acquire at some point in the near(ish) future. Thinking it might make a good Winter bike if I can't bring myself to ride the Trucker on the salty roads.
