I can believe that. In my teenage years back there I used to disappear into the mountains on my horse for a week or two at a time during the summer. Ran into some grizzled old dude named Charlie one time that had a little cabin in the middle of nowhere by the WVA border. Had to be in his 60's then and said he'd been living up there since his teenage years. I'm sure there's still some pretty remote spots back there to this day.

Very nice weather today took the SS Gravel Grinder Nishiki out of the back of the shed quick wash and took it for a short 10mile or so ride on local back roads and trails. A lot of wild flowers most I have seen in several years.

Just about 20 miles from Berkeley out to Montclair and back, then a small loop around town. I had a long ride planned, but that egg sandwich I had for lunch wasn't sitting well, so I shortened my ride and took the time to take a few photos.
A little park in Montclair, a small town in the Oakland foothills.

I stopped by Jitensha Studio (Ebisu importer) for some window shopping and took a few photos. They keep limited hours and encourage patrons to make appointments.
They have a line of new-to-me frames on display: Idaten (Jitensha Studio).
Nice assortment of tools, wheels/rims, high-end Japanese accessories, vintage and KOF bikes and frames.

Randy, you need to get a Mariposa and go back to that spot for another pic.
I took the Merckx Pro out today. I now have two Pros, so this one is “Pro SL” and the other is “Pro 753”. Last ride report with this I developed a knock on a long climb, causing me to cut the ride short. Tightening the chain ring bolts and lubing the hubs seems to have fixed that, at least on the short punchy climbs I did today. This is a nice handling bike and I will take the opportunity to put a plug in for the one in the classifieds right now.
Since I’m too lazy to start a dedicated thread, a little about the Merckx: I believe a 1981. I am more and more shying away from the 42 tooth small ring, so put a Stronglight compact crank with a wide range IRD freewheel on back. Racing triple RD, but stuck with a “C Record like” build with Retrofiction levers, brake levers, post and monoplaner brakes.
Zehmer Hall. My vote for least attractive building on UVA Grounds.

Rode the local "Breakfast Loop" this morning, with a stop at the revamped Thompson Lake Park. The Pashley felt light as a feather out there after a few weeks on my 1st-generation MTBs.

After yesterday's ride on my hacked and "climbified" Merckx, I felt obliged to pay penance to the C+V gods with some traditional geared riding. I threw my noodle legs over the Tommasini and rode 22 miles over some of the tougher climbs in town, 2000 feet worth. Man that Tommasini is a good climber, I don't know what kind of juju is in that frame. They don't show in the pics but this was first ride with a nice set of Simplex Retrofriction shifters I picked up at the Eroica rummage sale. Notice the slammed shift levers to get me up the 15% grade to the photo spot.

Still riding the Pashley, "Pepper" today. This time down East River Road to Summit/Grand Avenue, with a loop back to the High Bridge on Smith. I was enjoying the ride so much, I only stopped for one photo:
That wrench for the wheel nuts you see strapped to the handlebar bag is because it kept working its way out of the bag in danger of falling out. Just that much too long to fit inside. So I came up with this rather elegant solution.
I skipped lunch and opted for ice cream at Grand Ol' Creamery instead. Another idyllic Summer ride. Gotta enjoy them while the weather is nice.

I went for a short 15-mile loop into the Berkeley hills. I recently purchased a 32t freewheel for different bike. I’d read that the 1st gen Chorus RD could handle it, too, so I thought I’d try it out on my LOOK. It’s pushing the limits but with some fiddling I got it to work. It’ll be nice to have a 39x32 low gear option for extra hilly rides.

Got some spare wheels cleaned up and some tires re-glued and took the old Masi Gran Criterium out for a nice scenic ride along the ocean. Just 12 miles and fairly flat which is nice considering I’m creaping up on 70 and my low gear is 46-24.

Tour de Steamboat

Did 2 rides today - AM/PM style
The morning ride was a quick 50 up to Lake Forest. Temps were low, humidity high. We’ve gotten some rain and every thing is lush.
One of the many ravine bridges on the North Shore.
The second ride was to the local taproom. Plenty of bike parking - took the other orange bike. My wife’s Specialized in there too. Her first ride since 2019!
Devil in a Woodpile was playing a 3pm show. We caught the second set.
Beer cans stacked floor to ceiling back in the brewing area.
Had a nice double IPA and the wife had a sour.

I took my recently resto-modded Masi out today, leaving the friendly confines of Beaverton to venture into the big city (well, bigger than Beaverton anyway). I took Terwilliger Boulevard into town, cruised the East Bank Esplanade and then came back westward through Washington Park.
This is a little park-like area next to the Charthouse restaurant. On a clear day, there'd be a great view of Mt. Hood here, though it probably wouldn't have shown up in the picture anyway. I could make out the lower slopes, but the peak was hidden by clouds.
Here's the Masi next to the creatively named Steel Bridge. You can see the Oregon Convention Center across the river.
I had some time to kill here as the train crossing the bridge in the previous shot blocked my progress for quite a while. This is Riverfront Park facing the Burnside Bridge.
Same spot, looking across the Willamette to the Esplanade from whence I had come.
When I finally got past the train I went up Johnson Street towards Washington Park. I lost count of the number of "except bikes" signs I saw along this route. At least four times there were "Do No Enter -- Except Bikes" signs along the road. Then there was this one.
Among the local attractions in Washington Park is an archery range. I stopped there to recover following a steep section of road, and I liked the open sky above the range. This picture doesn't really capture it well.

Well, it's fine but sometimes I wish I had gone with the Morgan model with a 5-speed IGH. I like to ride this long distance sometimes and with the rolling hills and bad knees I'd like having a couple of more gears. Still the bike is a blast to ride.

I didn't know about the Morgan, so I had to look it up. There are two of them; a 3-speed and an 8-speed IGH. I've used the Nexus 8 in an old Bridgestone build:
... and it performed OK. But for the kind of money they want for the Morgan 8, I would have expected Alfine. Either way, though, nothing else rides like a Pashley. It's hard to describe, but I think it has to do with their choice of tubing and that slack geometry. I'm glad I was able to find mine used, because to buy a new one requires more than I would ever spend on one bicycle.

Maybe I can get something planned for next year. Be nice to make one of the rides the climb up Snowbasin which isn't all that bad if we go the old route where there is no vehicle traffic allowed for half the climb.
This is closed to cars and the surface is paved with some damage though.

On one of my regular routes today I heard a large piston-engined aircraft approaching.
Turned to look and it was a B-29, low and slow, one of two that are still flying.

I've been riding a lot more than usual lately, which has been my goal since changing careers last year and finally having a steady 40-hour work week. In fact, I'm riding so much, and also participating in group rides for the first time in a decade, that I'm hardly taking photos and hardly on my older bicycles because I just can't go fast enough and brake hard enough! So, I bought a 2013 Look 675 that's on its way... Until then, this 1999 Schwinn Peloton is my most modern ride and I am putting it through its paces to make sure the Look is worth the investment (I'll have 30 days to return it with no questions asked).
This morning I managed a solo ride of 38 miles with 1h58 minutes on the road, including about ten minutes of urban stop-and-go traffic. I drafted behind a truck at about 40mph, which is something I haven't done since I was in college! It goes without saying that I'm feeling really good, but now it's time to work!
