Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I believe it. Saturday was a 7500 cal day (burned, not consumed) for me and that was only six hours in the saddle.

Indeed. Most days you want food, there's that one day that food won't do it, and ya gotta have Taco Bell.

Some time in the last year or so, I found myself hungry and slightly tipsy. Nothing was open in the area or than Taco Bell, so of course I hit up the drive through. Eating it was like hate-watching something on TV.

Last night I went to my first social thing with the informal club I've been riding with for two years, a BBQ in someone's yard in honor of a departing member. Two things impressed me. One was how freaking old everyone looked without their headgear and the other was the unlimited supply of very cold Veuve Cliquot served in stemware by the guest of honor, the manager of a big downtown hotel.

I remember going to the local Taco Bell, way back in my single days, and they'd just introduced the Steak Fajita Burrito. Another customer orders one, and a couple minutes later he's back up at the counter, heckling the server, pointing to the appetizing picture on the wall and saying, "Does this look like that picture?"

I thought, "What in hell do you expect, for $3.99, from TACO BELL, for gods sake!" Like going to IHOP and complaining that the syrup isn't REAL maple syrup.

What!? I've recently started a high protein, high calorie regimen, tracking my intake, and I have yet to achieve the recommended 2,660 target. In fact 2,300 is my usual daily intake, even on days like today when I have a 560 calorie protein smoothie after a workout. Wtf are you eating?

Add one apple fritter and you'll probably shoot past 2660.

What the hell were you doing counting calories 31 years ago? I think only Jack LaLane and Jane Fonda had just co-invented the concept of calories 31 years ago.
