Nice! We're headed over that way a week from today, Camp Sherman to be more specific. I was thinking of riding from Camp Sherman to Lake Billy Chinook. One of my favorite parts of Oregon.

Well, I had thought that SW Metolius River Road went all the way through, but upon examining my maps, it appears that is not the case. I'm sure I'll find some suitable rides in the area, however.

Sorry for posting a non-C&V ride. Yesterday was a 50 miler with ~5K of climbing on my Cyclocross bike checking out some of the areas I thought might be good for Eroica training rides. For those of you in the Bay Area (or ex-Bay Area residents), I did a 20 mile ride on the streets to get to Alpine road in Portola Valley. Took Alpine up to Page Mill via the trail (Needed to use ~20 gear-inches and needed the 40's for this), then road around ~15 miles on the trails on Skyline. Finally, I crossed over to Black Mountain (saw a guy with an Eroica jersey going the other way), then descended Montebello and road home. It was a great ride, but most of the trails would not line up with the gearing or tires on my Bob Jackson. I do think the Montebello to Page Mill dirt stretch is perfect for an Eroica ride and requires a minimum of 2K of climbing to get there.

Nice weather today so easy 15mile or so ride on the local bike trail and roads which are finely clean and dry for the first time in about 8 months. Nice clear and clear some of the best pic conditions in a long time.

Some great riding weather so a finally got to ride to and ride half of the tie hack in Thompson just outside Fairplay. Got to see two rare things a rocky mountain monarch butterfly that landed on my bike during a water break sorry no pic just not that fast with the camera and a even more rare sight also no photo a nice young women fellow biker on the tough as nails hack trail that still has snow and mud.

@gugie and I drove down to Sisters today with the plan of riding up McKenzine Pass. Unfortunately, when we got to the gate this happened:



For those who don't know, McKenzie Pass is one of the mountain passes in Oregon that gets snowed in every winter (just like in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers). In the spring, the state parks people plow the road, and there's always a month or so when you can reach the top by bike before it's opened to cars. I was pretty sure we were in that period now. A local bike shop was reporting that the road was clear beyond the peak at Dee Wright Observatory. The sight at the snow gate was like this:



@gugie and I both thought the signage looked a bit more aggressive than usual, but the real critical factor was the State Parks truck in the background. The ranger in the truck seemed like she was trying to gaslight us a bit, claiming that bikes are never allowed on the road when cars aren't. She even had me believing that and assuming I must have just been breaking the rules when I've done it in the past. I believed it until I got home and checked a few state websites that backed up what I had previously believed. But whatever happened, she wouldn't let us up the road. So, we headed back down towards Sisters and explored a few of the side roads along the way, which turned out to be fairly nice.

Finally, we ended up at Sisters Meat and Smokehouse for a French Dip.


The Sisters Meat and Smokehouse website says they have "probably the best meat in the entire world." I'm inclined to believe them. I brought home two absolutely huge ribeye steaks which you'll see missing from the display below.

We're headed over there next Monday to go camping for a week. I'm looking forward to getting the Univega Alpina Uno off-road. The Sisters Meat and Smokehouse is a "must stop" for us every year, for steaks, sausages, jerky, and sandwiches. Please tell me you took home some jerky... soooo good!

I had to eat the sandwich before buying meats because when we first got there I wanted at least one of everything. I ended up with just the ribeyes and some chorizo sausage links. I’ve gotten their pepperoni sticks before, but never any jerky. I guess I need to go back.

Yeah, I've had the "I'll take one of everything" feeling there before. Perhaps I'll bring back a "jerky care package." And hit me up if you guys head over there again, that's my favorite part of Oregon, and my Peugeot PXR80 should suffice for McKenzie Pass riding.

After moving from Illinois, I'm trying to find some climbing legs. So today I hit our local climb for the second time. Not too long at 2.2 miles but you do gain 800'.

I took the long way home after work so I could drop by the LBS (Missing Link) on my way home.

First I made my way along the ridge of the Berkeley Hills with nice views of the bay. You can just barely see a bit of the Golden Gate Bridge peeking through the marine layer in the distance.



A quick stop by the Berkeley Rose Garden in bloom. This was a WPA/Civil Works Administration project commissioned in the 1930s.

Travelled to Ellensburg to ride the Yakima Canyon Loop yesterday with some friends.

It starts off with a climb out of town on Umptanum road.

The gravel ends once we drop down into the Wenas Valley. This lovely road is quiet and we enjoy the view of Wenas Lake as we head towards the town of Selah.

After stopping for lunch in Selah we close the loop by riding to Ellensburg via the Yakima canyon.

The weather couldn’t have been any nicer. Temps in the mid 70’s we were treated to a rare tailwind as we rode northward through the Yakima Canyon in the afternoon.
It was the first time I have ever been through the Canyon with a southerly wind.

Was sick with a cold last week, so limited riding (indoor on the trainer except for a bike lane trip on a misty Sunday). Strained my groin (adductor?) Sunday night playing softball (first day I felt good after the cold). Nice to get back out for a 22mi rehab ride (KT tape is amazing).

I made my way to the store get some stuff for dinner and ended up parking next another Voyageur!




Talked to the owner for bit and he does a lot of miles on this bike plus another Voyageur SP. Nice guy and not to often I run into c&v bike folks around here.

I took the indirect way home from work again today. Instead of a 4+ mile descent back home, I took a trail connection to Grizzly Peak Road and headed along the ridgeline before descending back into Berkeley. This diversion added another ~5 miles and almost 700+ feet of climbing. The marine layer wasn't as thick today as yesterday so you get to see more of the bay and bridges.
