Scapin

Hey Gang,
Any idea what model Scapin this is?

I’m aware Scapins are well regarded. I’m just not sure what the value is without more info.

The bike is listed, in NYC, as having Columbus tubing and Campy components. No other details (e.g., the type of Columbus tubing) are listed. The (prolific) seller is “asking $550”.

Thank you!

The components say "mid level" model to me, but the amount of chrome and pantographing on the frame says it could be much better......
Especially if the dropouts are stamped with the the Campagnolo brand.....

I think the frame is better than the parts. The fork blades have the pre-1988 Columbus decal. The only Scapin with the internal brake cable routing prior to 1986 was the Aerone, which this plainly is not. Therefore, it is 1986-1987 or possibly 1988 if they had leftover decal stock. Given the apparent era, the investment cast lugs, internal rear brake cable routing and apparent lack of a chainstay bridge are pointing towards an SLX tubeset. I'd be very surpirsed if it was less than SL It's definitely not mid-range Matrix/Cromor, based on the fork blade decal.

...by coincidence, I just bought an exact match for that frame in terms of paint and chrome, but in a larger size, last year. Mine cost about that same price ( on CL in the Bay Area), but came with a new Record component group .

Mine has no frame tubing sticker either, but the seat post is 27.0, so I presume at least the seat tube is Columbus SL. Which, in a larger frame like mine, I would expect to see anyway, even if the frame tubing is mixed. The two possibilities that occur to me are that either they were sold as frames only, to be built out by the new owner, or someone has removed the New Record group from your example, for separate sale. The stuff that's on there works OK, but it is generally valued lower than New Record.

...looking at it again, I can't tell much about the components, except for the rear derailleur. It's possible someone has just replaced that with a lower priced mechanism.
