Here we go peeps. Stuff kept getting in the way, but I got er done. As close to original as I can get without the tubulars and the brake levers. I will take some pics with the tubulars and my other wheelsets to see what looks best. Then put on a different freewheel /brake pads/holders and give it a spin.

That I should a beauty. What are the bars? Original spec! And the levers? The look great! Leave the freewheel on and I bet you get a couple PRs on your everyday segments without trying.

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep these for now. They have adjustable springs. As I was looking up the 7400 levers, I think I saw a thread you were on that talked about them having a weakness. Or maybe that they were crazy expensive and the next lever in line had a problem.

The freewheel is a 12-20 with 15 and 16 sprockets in the middle. A little more range than the average corncob.

Yeah, the 7400 brake levers aren't great, but I'd be on the hunt for some.

It's a 54, so you can be envious.

Sunny today, so I can take outdoor pics even though it's cold. The color on the ST, forks, etc is a tweener. It's different than on the 85? IM. I think the bronze groups that came on the 84 Turbo and some other brands would look sweet on this bike.

Speaking of the cold that a lot of the country is experiencing, it will be 3 weeks today that I haven't had heat at my office. Bad fan motor and supply issues. HVAC company hasn't located a new one yet. At least my unit is in the middle of 8, so not exposed on 2 sides. The lowest the temperature has gone in the office is 53. Yesterday it got up to 65 like the outdoor temp.

7400 levers are fine for what they are, basically a Campagnolo NR/SR copy so close that NR hoods fit properly. But they are pre-SLR so no internal springs and less leverage than later levers.
7401 levers use the same bodies as 6209’s, still an early design and require the use of unusually sized cable ends/ferrules in order to work, which are often discarded or lost during disassembly.
By the time they got to 7402, Shimano had it all figured out:SLR, good action, lots of leverage, and a match for both single and dual pivot calipers. In an interesting side development, Shimano also issued early versions of 1050 and 6400 levers in an SLR/non-aero combination. I’ve used some of those on builds over the years (and actually have a pair of each on two bikes in the stable right now) and believe that the braking quality as the same as later levers.

But yeah, 7400’s -actually all 740X levers- are well into crazy pricing territory. Good news is that unlike many later levers they can be disassembled and restored, although it’s hard to find Rustines black hoods for 7400’s these days and virtually impossible to find 6209 or 7402 hoods.

Gratuitous pics of the pre IM bikes....and the T-man's(minus the R) Centurion Cinelli Equipe. Texaspandj has a Comp TA he can post. These paved the way for the IM.

Interesting weight observation while handling the bikes for the pics. The Prestige felt lighter than the other 2..........with the original and red tired wheelsets. Both are 6 speed/<28T/23mm tires. But with the other 2 wheelsets, the Prestige felt about the same as the other bikes. Those 2 are 8/9 speed with 28 or 30T clusters and 25mm tires. One has 5500 hubs. The other has 6400 hubs. I checked the rims. The silver Araya is 15g heavier than the Mavics. The black Suns are around 40gs lighter than the Mavics, though. The 8 and 9 speed cassettes are both new SRAM units. The older wheelsets appear to have straight gauge spokes while the others have double butted.

A lighter frame will only go so far. The real savings comes from what's hanging on the frame.

I did not want the black/lavender or the green/orange decals. The outlines are enough.

Pics and lighting don’t do justices. A lot of bling.

SL tubing. Some Cinelli panto.

OEM decals in most places…

Needs a ton of cleaning. The aluminum Ofmega headset does not polish well, but it’s super light. Cinelli panto on the fork crown peeking through.

Yes. I bought a zero-offset Thomson that was listed as a 27.2. My guess is 27.0, but no markings ($35, you get what you pay for.)

I’m working on a better shim.

I found this in pretty original condition on FB marketplace last month for $50. (also scored a park stand for $20) I wanted an Ironman sooooo bad when I was 16yrs old so I had to get it. I do not do garage queens so I had to make this rideable for me. It now has 650b x 38mm tires, a triple and a shimano 10 speed cassette which work amazing in the mountains. From the first few miles I knew this was going to be my new favorite bike, it is absolutely perfect in every way. I threw this bike together on a rainy day with parts I had available, including the yellow cable housing. I intended to change it to white but I like the way it brings out the colors on the logos, so it stays. I will ride this bike until I can no longer pedal!

So Cool. I plan to 650B my wife's Miami Vice. She won't say so but she would like wider tires and 25 is the max on an 87 expert.

Do it! I have 35-38mm tires running 35-40psi on every road I own and I won’t ride anything smaller. I can ride so much longer without fatigue, I only wish I had realized this 35+ years ago!!

It's pretty straight forward. 10 speed Shimano bar ends that I mounted to the downtubes, Ultegra 10sp rear and the 600 front that came on the bike. I wish you could remove the ugly black covers on the sifters like you can with the Campys.
