I guess kids grew up faster back then. It's hard to imagine a parent letting his/her 16 year old go on a biking tour of 'Western Montana, Idaho, Washington, and some of Canada' by himself. Or with a stranger he met through a posting on Bicycling magazine.

This reminds me how Bicycling! completely lacked humor. Oddly, reading it now made me laugh a little.

If I wore shorts like the guy in the Motobecane ad, would the chicks fawn over me?

It ain't the shorts, but the socks. Those socks are the bomb

However, maybe if his shorts were made of the same material as the trousers worn by the "commuter" on the cover, they'd be rushing up in droves!

OMG! I actually had a pair of pants exactly like those of the cover model. I even wore them!

While you guys are focused on the Motobecane guy's style, I'd like to know how many of you do your bike maintenance in white tennis gear.....and if you do, how long does it stay white. I can't even walk by a bicycle without some grease transferring mysteriously (and unbeknownst to me until my better half points it out).....

Can you post Berto's piece on 15 speeds? It would be interesting to find out what he thought was a good set up for 3 x 5 gearing.

Yes! Berto's articles on bicycle technology were consistently interesting and informative, even on rare occasions when I disagreed with him.

March 1977, my freshman year in college, and those socks were standard issue for all the cool guys in my dorm. I also had those Nike running shoes and my hair looked about the same.

I'm ogling over that touring gear. Who wouldn't want their whole pannier/rack back setup to transform into Optimus Prime? Imagine touring 1,000 miles to the start of the PCT, and being able to throw the whole works on your back.

And don't get me started on those chaps...

The Part 1 link of Berto's series was included in Post 1 of this thread. Here's the link to Part 4 which also includes the links to Parts 2 and 3.

I don't know about the address... but I love the way the two are pictured in the ad. The man/boy with a far away gaze of an adventurer, the woman/girl looking up at him adoringly. How cliche.
I must say I still like the women's styles from the 70's, either that or the women back then were more attractive... The men's styles were sorely lacking.

I swear I've seen couches and curtains made from the same fabric as the cover dude's pants.

But really, that was back when models and celebrities still mostly looked like the average person could relate to them. They're mostly made of various combinations of plastic, anabolic steroids, and botulinum toxin now.

Looks like he's wearing "stackies" shoes - thick soles, high lift heels and bulbous toes:

The Flagg Bros shoes from my youth (in the 60's) had Cuban Heels and pointy toes that you could walk up a chain link fence in! Squash roaches in the corner too!!!

My shoes from the late 70's:

"Elephant Bells"

I remember that boat too, the Golden Gate Clipper. It ran from the City to Corte Madera up into the 90's or maybe later???

Bike looks like a mid 70's Nishiki...
