World Tour Top Salaries

Interesting. Some thoughts

A) Peter Sagan's salary is not a legacy of an old contract - it's a new contract he signed last year. His brand-name is really worth that much as compared to WvA or MvdP? I don't think so....
B) Only two pure sprinters (Viviani, Gavira) in the top 20.
C) Chris Froome is a very comfortable has-been
..
..
  1. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates): €6.0 million
  2. Chris Froome (Israel Start-Up Nation): €5.5 million
  3. Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies): €5.5 million
  4. Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers): €3.5 million
  5. Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.8 million
  6. Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.5 million
  7. Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl): €2.3 million
  8. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar): €2.2 million
  9. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.2 million
  10. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): €2.2 million
  11. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan): €2.1 million
  12. Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma): €2.0 million
  13. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix): €2.0 million
  14. Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers): €2.0 million
  15. Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ): €2.0 million
  16. Romain Bardet (Team DSM): €2.0 million
  17. Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech): €2.0 million
  18. Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers): €1.9 million
  19. Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic): €1.9 million
  20. Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates): €1.8 million

Wout only 2.2? I've been wondering when UAE will pick him up.

As we all know, the the salaries are partly a function of when it was that people signed their contracts, with outcomes different from the potentials that were anticipated at that time. Also, historic GT or other famous winners and team leaders (not just Froome and Sagan, but also Nibali, some others) probably demand more because their name recognition and their effect on the team helps even if they are no longer winning races.

But still, there are some surprises. I would not have guessed that Fuglsang and Bardet would be in the top 20. Bardet was on the GC podium at TdF twice 5 years ago, but AFAIK, has never won a major stage race or monument. Kwiakotski has had some great results, but his world championship was 8 years ago.

But one thing to note is that after the top 5 or so, the rest have salaries quite similar to one another, and I'll bet the next 10 (#s 20-30) are all pretty close to these.

I think G has a new-this-year contract, late signing, and he seems remarkably overpaid. I thought he was going to be slumming it or maybe on the street.

Roglic seems the bargain of the bunch.

Concur on Bardet and Fuglsang.

I wonder what the secondary economics are for the top riders. I imagine there are a lot more endorsement deals for a Belgian on QuickStep or a Frenchman on AG2R than there are for a Pole on a US team. But I assume some of it transcends the team and none of it approaches Peyton Manning money.

I'm pretty sure that Peter Sagan makes bank this way, but few of the others are quite as famous or as charismatic.
