Your cog is slipping.
Seriously. I usually use the Park Tool cutting guide clamped in my bench vise and a hacksaw. Like you said, about a minute.

I have done it in the past with a hacksaw, followed with the rasp to clean up and chase the edges. The problem is, at this moment, I have neither a hacksaw nor a rasp-file. It is cheaper for me to go down to my friend's shop and have him give me 5 minutes of his time to use his tools to cut, chase, re-grease and install the finished fork than it would be for me to order a quality hacksaw, rasp and await their delivery.
I guess I could go down to Home Depot and pay those thieves.............blargh. A pox on all your houses

i can tell you from experience that you gotta be careful with the real cheapos...they are not square & will walk a little as you spin them round the tube & don't make as clean a cut as better ones...

It will flare (mushroom) out on one side but not the other. You need to have the cutting side on the steerer tube, so that the mushroomed part is on the piece you have removed. I've made that mistake myself as well.

Thanks TT, never knew. Will have to get a pipe cutter again, hacksaw cuts are always ragged.

I was not aware there was so much science behind cutting a steerer...I usually just cut it, a guides nice, but even if its crooked its not going to make that much of a difference.
Just lick it, stick it, and ride!

Thanks! Yeah its the lugged kilo from BikeIsland. And I agree, the dropouts are similar in style to the new Rush and the Wabi Special.

Still kicking.
White really hides the lugs unless the lugs are chromed or some different color...
