Summer tires 3.8"

I'm looking for summer tire suggestions. I've currently got Surly Nates, but they have big lugs that I don't need for summer riding

Ideally they would be something like Maxxis DTH tires. I like to ride to trails, so something that isn't too loud on pavement, but can still get traction on dirt forest trails.

I've been riding my 4.8" Jumbo Jims on gravel, dirt, mud, root & rock trails.

Wow! Seems like Jumbo Jim's are popular!

How do they do in snow? Are they a good all season tire?

Jumbo Jim sucks in snow unless you ride it on a trail that has been groomed and packed very hard. Throw an inch of snow on top of that and they suck.

What rim size and width? Do not overlook the VeeTires Speedster i.e. Jones bike...I think they run to 3.5 they run quieter and wear a bit better. I have run them on an 80mm wide rim without issue. Another oddball option the Minion FBF front and rear. Sounds dumb until you realize that center block will save the unavoidable off center wear these tires can have if ridden on road and reduce noise.

Also run down to the local E Bike retailer, they may have something even better to fit a wider rim for less aggressive riding.

I hate to wear down the stock Surly Nate tires on pavement especially when I don't need big knobs for summer riding.

Fat tire options for pavement are paltry for 26", and non-existent for 27.5". I tried Origin8 Supercell tires, but the self-steering is insane unless inflated to the max 20 PSI, and they are quite heavy. I never tried them, but the Vee Speedster gets decent reviews, and the Vee Chicane looks quite interesting to me. I'm running Bontrager Barbegazi tires now in warmer months, and I just live with the fact that they are noisy and unnecessarily knobby for pavement.

I don't know, it's the best tire on snow I've ridden, but I haven't tried a large number of tires. Vee Mission, Kenda Juggernaugt Elite and Sport, and Jumbo Jim in 4" and 4.8".

I do most of my riding on trails that are either not groomed with double footprints or packed by a pass or two of snowshoes.

"I need summer tires"
Jumbo Jims
'but they suck in the snow"
Then don't use them in the snow during your summer rides....

You don't know what you don't know. 45nrth Dunderbeist and Flowbeist or Surly Bud and Lou blow all those tires away in snow.

Sure. I just don't want to spend the money on another set of tires, and the Jims are as good an all-rounder as exists. This is my only mountain bike.
