Silence of the Coaster Brakes
I deal with a lot of coaster brakes. An issue that has come up is what lubrication is best for the actual brake shoe. I have experimented with various types of grease. Most grease types do not work, as the hub typically starts screaming after a few test brakes. What I have found is that thick gear oil works well for a short time, but eventually gets depleted and the noise resumes. The best solution I have found so far is to get a grease that has oil-like properties. I have this NLGI 0 grease that is almost liquid, which works pretty well.

I use high temp automotive axle bearing grease.

I've used common bench grease (Park, Phil, marine in a tube/tub) for brake shoes on a few dozens of CB hub overhauls I've done over the years. Can't say I've had a return because of noise/brake squeal that I remember. Andy

You have to love the simplicity of coaster brakes. They are great for keeping a bike simple. The problem show up when we demand more from then then they were intended for. Repack races will fry any lubricant that you try. The hubs just don't have enough ability to shed the heat from braking.
