I keep getting emails "We will be shipping packages shortly, starting with ones with earliest shipping date. Please forward a copy of the invoice if you wish your package delivered", etc. I've forwarded the info at least 7 times. Sigh.

We are all doing this wrong.
This persons offers to restore your bike for a flat $250. Oh, and you buy the parts. What he says in the first paragraph is true but he simply strips your bike down to bare frame and cleans it and then he re-installs the cleaned parts (less the parts that need to be replaced). Wonder why it takes a week.

"If you are dragging your old bike out of the basement after it has been sitting for decades, do not ride it. You risk damaging it internally and possibly getting hurt yourself. The grease that was keeping your bearings rolling smooth, will have dried-out long ago, and combined with road grit, will have hardened around the bearings. You will damage the internal cups and cones in the bike which cannot be replaced. These old bikes deserve better. If you have one, get in touch and I'll overhauled/restore it and it will live-on for decades to come.

I charge a flat fee of $250 to overhaul/restore your bike. Whether the bike is road, mtn, hybrid, steel, or aluminum. I am an independent bicycle mechanic and not a bike shop, just a guy with a thing for older bikes. Send me a pic of the bike, let me take a look, and I'll let you know what I think.

The bike will be completely disassembled. All the components and the drivetrain will be removed, deep-cleaned, and adjusted. The fork will be removed and the headset bearings replaced, greased, and adjusted. The wheelhub bearings will be replaced, then greased and adjusted. The bottom bracket will be overhauled with new bearings and grease. The internal cups and cones where all these bearings travel will be deep-cleaned to provide the cleanest and smoothest surface possible. The wheels will be trued, rims and spokes will be individually cleaned, and the wheelhubs will be buttery smooth. The frame will be cleaned and polished. Light rust on chrome parts will be dealt with, but not a rusty frame. The brake calipers and levers, shifters, derailleurs, cranks and chainrings, and drivetrain will all be disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt. There's not a nut or bolt on it I won't touch.

You would be responsible for the cost of any new tires and tubes and any components that might be worn out, like a chain, freewheel, bar tape, or brake pads. But I include the installation of any of these in the $250 price. It usually takes a full week to get a bike done. Bike shops in Atlanta are currently at 3 weeks delay or more for most repairs, and a lot of shops are now running out of critical parts due to shortages.

There are some exclusions to that $250 price, like high-end collectable bikes. I don't paint bikes or do decal work. I also don't include any work on sew-ups, or tubular tire rims(you'll know if you have them) in that price. And I don't do what bike shops call a "tune-up"(whatever that is).

You'll notice that most handlebars in the pics are not wrapped. These pics were taken before a new owner could customize the bike with whatever color bartape they liked, and so we could adjust the brake levers if needed.

For those of you not in the know on this joke; I sent a bike to Wesley about six months ago and the border patrol has locked down any cross border traffic due to covid related hysteria. He has not gotten the bike delivered to him yet, and I keep asking if he got it. This is a result of the pandemic and how we respond to it. Not much fun but what can be done? Smiles, MH

Not "trailing arm" as much as "trailing axle," which Yamaha used on the XV550 Vision in the '80s. Only known production use, as far as I know.


Trailing arm front suspension. Requires linkage, unlike the other one. Don't know of any production versions.

Interesting. I've sent small parts (not frames or complete bicycles) to Canada during the border closure and not had a problem. Delivery took barely longer than in-country mail service. Go figure.

I agree with the border not slowing down cross border mailing but "pre-Covid" I could collect my US mail in N Falls, NY at a private mail company that accepts packages for Canadians. I would pay $3 per package and collect my mail. That cut shipping costs in half and sometimes way more compared to direct mailing. When Covid came nobody figured we'd be in lock down for months so we shipped it to the US mail box. Now, I can bike along the Canadian side of the Niagara gorge and look across and see the damn place, about 600 yds away, but still out of reach....

Great condition - there is a little pitting in the metal from surface rust and I couldn’t get to all of the surface rust, so you might need to sand blast some of the metal. Light scratching of paint, but pretty good overall. All original parts.

For those folks who live where vintage bicycles are still not treated as gold mines by speculators, it must be hard to accept the stories you hear about Canadian bicycle pricing. Let me help you towards accepting the stupidity in pricing that exists, keeping in mind that for most Canadians, the fall simply means less riding.
