12spd SRAM Cassette no room for 12th gear chain

Bike: Fargo 2021 XL Frame
Problem: SRAM 12spd cassette on SRAM XD driver hub, see pic- no clearance for the chain between 12th gear cog and alternator drop-out!. Can't get the chain on that cog!
Notes: I have a separate wheelset with a Shimano 12spd on a Microspline- no problem. There is enough room with that combination wheel/hub/cassette.

Whats the root cause? solution? What to look into? Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is you have the wrong axle cap on that side. And what is an 'alternator drop-out'?

Not sure what is the "Axle Cap" is exactly. These are Thru Axles. That said, maybe I can add a spacer here to get the clearance I need?

Replace my term "Alternator Drop out" with "frame seat/chain stay axle interface". The Fargo just uses a separate bolt-on piece here that is removable for different options, like for adding a Rohloff hub and Gates belt drive.

I know it's a thru-axle. There has to be some kind of end cap on the axle to screw into the dropout...not the 'frame seat/chain stay axle interface'.

OK, yeah the drop-outs have the threaded end cap incorporated into them. These drop outs include the derailleur hanger as shown.

Wondering why this is no issue at all with my other wheelset with the Shimano 12spd cassette? Maybe I do need to add a spacer on the SRAM cassette where it interfaces with the alternator bracket to get the clearance I need?

Alternator bracket...please, stop with that crap. Post a photo of the DS of your wheel, that'll help.

If you don't get an answer, I'd suggest swapping back and forth between your two wheelsets and maybe you can see what's different. Also, support@salsacycles.com Please update when you get it resolved.

I agree with cxwrench that you're missing an axle cap. Novatec website doesn't offer much info on axle configuration so contact them and ask or visit your LBS with the wheel. Contact Us – Novatec 2021 (novatecusa.net) A photo of the drive side of the hub/wheel removed from the bike so we can see the axle would be helpful.

I should have mentioned a photo of the NDS axle would be good too so we can see if there is a cap on that side.

remove the cassette & remove the spacer. If that change enables an open space, try a thinner spacer if still needed to torque it back together.

Sram road axs cassettes only fit on an xdr freehub body, not an xd. An xd mountain bike cassette will fit on an xdr freehub body if a 1.85mm spacer is added.

OK, did some measurements and took some pics.

The Novatec hub (SRAM cassette) wheelset is -2mm offset on the drive side compared to my Hope hub (Shimano cassette) wheelset. I took measurements with a caliper on both the drive side and disk brake side. My caliper's batteries were dead so I rounded to the nearest mm which is about the best I could read. illustrated here:

Here I used the Thru Axle to align the wheels looking at the drive side, left a gap between them

Drive side of Novatec hub wheel:

So much talk, so little measuring!
What is your dropout width?
What is the width of those wheels?
It's not going to solve your problem, but would be good to know ..... Looks like your frame is 148mm wide as far as I can tell from Fargo website.

That ~2mm difference. Are you sure that there isn't a 1.8 mm spacer behind your SRAM cassette that shouldn't be there?

that very well could be the answer. the difference in width of XD vs XDR drivers is 1.8mm and when you buy a new MTB cassette they now come with a 1.8mm spacer to allow them to fit on an XDR driver.

Yeah that could be the case, I will remove the SRAM cassette this weekend and check for that spacer and eliminate if it exists than report back.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, Boost spacing is 148mm nominally and I should verify on the wheelsets. I don't have a caliper big enough to measure the width of the wheels but could try a tape measure or other macro measurement method..

Pulled the cassette off tonight And reviewed the cassette and XD hub. Reinstalled and tightened down good. Guess what? I got the correct spacing now!

Root cause:. Cassette not properly tightened/engaged on hub. This was my first XD hub, so I'm learning!

Appreciate everyone's input and feedback. Really helps to bounce my problems off others who are knowledgeable.

About the 1.85mm spent spacer. That's included with xdr freehub bodies, so an xd cassette can be used. An xd freehub body cannot be used with an xdr cassette.
