Hi, hope I'm in the right place, apologies if not.
I just picked up this old Peugeot road bike to restore, it only cost 50 quid and I like these old bikes so seemed a fun project.
Can anyone ID this model? I've done some searching using the info I have but not getting anything. I haven't even come across one in this colour. It was listed as 1970s and it's was made in France if that helps. It has a simplex rear derailleur (which may or may not need replacing, I need to give it a proper look) Weinmann brakes, and a pretty snazzy red metal Peugeot badge mounted on the front (my other Peugeot just had a sticker) not sure if any of that info helps with ID
It needs a new back brake too so I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of a compatible model.

Welcome! Looks like a UO-8 but with different wheels. I don't think we got them in that color. If you can find a little white sticker taped to the frame it should have the model number and size and serial number on it. Pretty standard Peugeot practice.

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. Ok that gives me something to go at. I guess I was hoping it was going to turn out to be a gem I'd got at a bargain price but maybe not. The fancy badge on the front got me excited.

On the underside of the top tube there's two hook/lug things, one near the handlebars one near the seat. I can't for the life of me work out what they are. There's also some kind of mounting lug near where the back brakes would sit, I assume that something to do with the rear brake mounting?

Apologies for my ignorance on bike anatomy, I'm learning gradually.

Aha! The lugs on the top tube are pump mounts. Interesting that they would build these directly onto the frame.

Ok that just leaves the lug by the rear brake and another lug I have just noticed on the rear fork...maybe a reflector mounting lug?

Those braze ons are probably for a rear rack.

There's a generator tab on the non-drive side seat stay, so it should be the UK equivalent of a UE8. Decal scheme suggests late 1970s.

I've been looking at some pictures and I think you're right. Although mine only seems to have one. The lower lug I think is a dynamo mount.

Yeah I just found a picture of a similar model with the generator fitted. It certainly looks very similar to the UE8 but they all seem to have the pump mount on the down tube, I don't know if that is a significant detail.

There's also some pretty nice patterned engraving on the handlebars. Is that standard for these bikes?

Pump pegs often were dependent on the frame size. Sometimes they were on the seat-tube, more often on the top tube to open the other two tubes up for water bottle cages.

However, you are right, most pump pegs on Uo8s I have seen on here are on the down tube.

so after about 3 days of searching I can confidently state that I am now one of those chumps trying to work out how to fit a rear brake to these bikes. I've read forum after forum and searched high and low and i don't actually think I've seen this issue properly resolved.
There is one of the adapter things for sale on eBay for £60 or something which just seems ridiculous.
None of the mafac racer calipers I'm seeing have the adapter so I feel like I'm running out of options.
Just use the front brake and lean back?

Edit: I should clarify for those not aware, the rear caliper mounting hole is drilled vertically, in line with the forks. This requires an adapter that the rear caliper attaches to and then the adapter attached vertically into the hole.

The part that you are looking for is Ref 478E. They were used with Mafac RAID, RACER and "S" model brakes on bikes with fenders. The ones that I saw were on French Mixte model bikes like Gitanes and Peugeots.




Good luck finding one. They were as rare as.... (quand les poules auront des dents)



I'd check French eBay or other selling websites. Also you might be able to find a cheap "donor bike" that has one of those mounts.

Thank you for the information, hopefully I can put it to good use. I did find a caliper on french eBay which at least looks like it could work, it has a very similar looking adapter but I don't recognise the name and searching doesn't yield many results.
