Do I need a step down ferrule for the cable?

You can run it without but it looks nicer if you have the ferrule.

Since we're on the subject of a Super Record Pat 84.

I noticed the derailleur I purchased came with a different set of High and Low limit screws. Were these OEM or aftermarket replacement?

I got it at a great price so if theyre not OEM I already have a lead to replacement screws.

You may need to zoom in...ill take a better picture

Those are US-market CPSC-mandated "safety" covers, used starting around 1978. 100% original. Most people just remove them though.

That makes complete sense. I've seen these only onnce in my Google searches and even velobase has them pictured without the safety covers. Thanks for the info.

I like them even more now that they're OEM

They're in the photos in the 1982 "Olympic" catalog, but they aren't in the parts diagrams.

I have a '77 CPSC Nuovo Record group with this small black gizmo. The inner side of the crank arm also changed that year for safer front derailleur.

Hard to believe that sometime, somewhere, someone got injured by a naked limit screw.
The #632 pump umbrella, yeah, now that thing was dangerous!

I have those on mine, I didn't know they were a bodge for 'safety' reasons. So they just pop off or do I unscrew the screw the whole way? Bike is at the in-laws so I can't try it myself as yet.

You have to remove the screw and pull it off, replace the screw. I think I might have them still on my Pat. 81. They don't bother me enough to remove them.
