Child Seat Compatibility

Hi,

I have a Trek Marlin 5 (2017) mountain bike. I want to install a rear mounted child seat for my 18 month old.

I'm not sure whether the bike is compatible with frame mounted or rack mounted seats. The bike has brake discs.

According to Trek, the bike has rack and fender mounts. If you can install a rack you should also be able to install a child seat using the same mounting points

Does it have to be a rack that is only compatible with brake discs though?

Depends on where the caliper is mounted. If the caliper is on the topside face of the chainstay, then you should be able to use a regular rack. If the caliper is on the topside face of the seatstay, you may need a disc brake specific rack.

I'll see if I can get some pics as I'm not sure to be honest.

I was hoping to install a frame mounted rack to be honest as I'd read that this is the preferred option. But I take it that's out of the question

According to This pic https://archive.trekbikes.com/se/sv/2017/Trek/marlin_5

Yours has the caliper on the top of the seatstay. As such, you’ll need a disc-brake compatible rack.

I was thinking of getting the highly rated hamax caress as it can be frame mounted despite the cabling being on the back of the seat tube.

I have the Hamax Sleepy (lower tier model than the Caress) and am super happy with it. The only thing I'd double check is (based on a quick Google search) it appears that the Marlin has quite a steep seat tube angle. Since the seat tube angle is what determines the child seat angle, I'd double check that it still fits.
