Carmageddon

The recent New Yorker has a review of two books, Carmageddon, Daniel Knowles, (Abrams), and Paved Paradise, Henry Graber,(Penguin). Both books discuss the damage our obsession with Automobiles has caused. The books and the review might be of interest to some here.

an idealized version of Neal Cassady, subsequently memorialized as Kerouac’s irresistible Dean Moriarty. Cars are for poets and outlaws, the subway for the intimidated and the enslaved.

Kramden and Norton vs. Kerouac and Ginsberg

Ironic choice as Cowboy Neal ended up driving a bus with some notoriety

67 million cars are sold annually. They need these sales to keep open for business. Think about that for a minute. What generation will have to make all the changes in order to stop this crazy out of control machine??
PS , so true in the analogy about the Honey Mooners. Ralph worked in public transit, and Norton , the public sewers
