Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, for the love of god.

As soon as I got my system 32 years ago (AR turntable; CJ preamp; Aragon power amp; Magneplanar speakers), I allowed my subscription to Stereophile to lapse, figuring it was the safest thing to do, financially.

Ah gotcha. I'm not that picky, basically all of my bikes are built with bang-for-the-buck as a component choice filter. Lots of gently used things in my garage.

And you sure can spend a lot on a bike as simple as a single-speed. Can't get any Instagram clout if you're not running something from Paul, Phil, or anything NJS approved.

It can get really crazy. My home system is decent, but a far cry from "Audiophile." Got some big ass speakers though.

Uh, no. Just the turntable. Speakers started at $450. Integrated amps at $300 or so.

And yeah, better than CD.

There are a few things about SS/FG that I find appealing, simplicity being among them. Light weight via simplicity would be another. If I'm going to do it, it would want it to be pretty light. If I went to the trouble of building up an SS/FG and it was no lighter than the Cervelo, I'd be sorely disappointed.

It dawned on me that it's Friday, which made me smile when I thought of some choice quotes from the movie Friday... which then made me frown when I was reminded that I'd seen that Tiny Lister (Debo in Friday, aka Zeus by the wrestling fans) had passed. They're saying it may have been covid.

2020.

Lordy, the power those things must draw!

Back when we lived in a flat in San Francisco, with its 1929 electrical system, turning on the power amp would cause a slight flicker of the lights as the power supply caps charged up.

My current at home is nice, but modest by some standards. Denon AVR, Pro-Ject turntable, KEF 700 right and left, R200c, and KEF in ceilings for surround and height, REL T9i sub.
