But to be honest, I've been hesitating to add more lights to my own modest display because so far I'm the only one on the block with lights. I'd hate to appear extravagant, but yet what does my display of spirit have to do with anybody else? Enjoy it and keep moving or cover your eyes when you pass by.

Surprisingly, we have a very diverse neighborhood - white, black, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Hispanic, Polynesian, and whatever else. I'm guessing not more than 60% WASP. When our kids were in elementary school, the student body at their school represented 26 different native languages. It often surprises people how diverse our area really is.

That's great, but making light in a setting like this does nothing to change the perception, again, typically by those with privilege and a lack of perspective, that it's much ado about nothing.
Good rule of thumb for mockery: punch up, not down. IOW, I get to make fun of you dusty, old, well-to-do guys with more bike than legs whereas my good looks opens me up to "pretty boy" jabs from all of you ugly mugs.
