Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Only time i’ve seen anything like it is on courier bikes so they can lock them up anywhere, leaning on anything, and not beat up the paint.

This started out as a Cannondale SR300 road bike from the 80's. When I got it , it was just a frame and fork . First task was to make the track forks , I cut around the drop outs (they were vertical) I left the radius where the axle sits so I didn't disturb the original geometry and then welded in the horizontal bars . Next was to make it 120mm spacing , I made some cuts to the seat and chain stays and it folded together a 120mm spacer was used and then of course welded up . This was doable for me because I found a welder close by and I have a mini lathe with a milling attachment .
I hope you like it , Mark .

^^^ Very impressive, I'd never have known that you modified it had you not told me.

What crank length and gear combo do you run for that type of a course? Do you stay with shorter (~165) cranks and push something close to 42-17?

175mm (6'5") and 40-20. This frame has a pretty high BB (58mm BB drop) plus my tires measure 40mm inflated so I have tons of clearance.

Nice! But 40-20…then that just has to be a freewheel? Your legs would spin off going down those hills if it was a fixie! Either way, nice set up—it sure looks to be fun!

Yes - freewheels. I started at 39-16 and have gone lower and lower and gotten faster and faster on course.

Hopped on the pedal, bike stopped and I promptly did a faceplant...oops. I'm okay though....I may flip the rear to a freewheel and add a U brake.

And just like that...It's gone...sold with a few extra for profit....Another will come along I'm sure.

Spicer cycles triple triangle. Nice 30 piece ride on Saturday. Absolutely beautiful weather here in the Midwest.

Yet another configuration of my Cross Check--just went back to singlespeed/drop bars and loving it. Ritchey Ergomax bars, Gevenalle brake levers. Mostly trail riding, lotsa hills, 34x18 currently.

This frame has been hanging for a year or so. Built a new wheelset with Origin8 hubs and H Plus Son TB14 rims, and recruited an amalgamation of new and vintage parts to complete the build.

Needs some tweaking but overall I'm quite happy. Especially with the wheelset and how shiny everything is

Happy International Singlespeed Day!

New to me bike in 2022! I swapped the old heavy wheels for these h plus sons, added mash toe cages, swapped the saddle and of course added this rack!

I'd guess that to be a Schwinn Voyageur or Le Tour chrome variety.

Agreed, it's a beautiful build!
