42 degrees is pretty much the lowest temperature at which I will ride a bike. Easier if it's sunny, but at 71 it just takes too long to warm up (and warm up again after the ride) to go out for more than a few hours. Lucky to have three (!) opportunities to ride outside this week, of which this was the third. 29 miles around some of the local lakes, combination of pavement and gravel with a handful of very steep, very abrupt climbs thrown in. Lots of people out walking as well, more than a few couples bundled up against the cold. Only two other riders, though.

Got the battery-powered Christmas lights and the big stereo on the ol' chrome Schwinn cruiser, and did the recon for the upcoming group light-viewing rides on Friday the 16th and Monday the 26th. A cooler and damper than usual night in Moon Valley, and an inopportune failure of the battery connector to the headlight had me channeling my inner longshoreman and using language somewhat inconsistent with the surrounding decor. But got it working with some impromptu rewiring, and made it home appropriately illuminated.

Along the canal and heading to work this morning. I am neglectful of this bike despite it being my commuter, and it reminded me of my inattentiveness by dropping a few gears shortly after the photo when I cycled up a hill and tried to downshift (its got a moody SA S5 hub), and I suddenly had the spins. I walked the hill, managed to find 4th gear on the down and limped the remainder of the ride.

Heading home at the end of the day, while waiting at a traffic light I noticed the front wheel had a lot of play...the left side nut was loose. Needless to say I did some maintenance tonight...

I am not yet ready for cold weather riding so have been on the trainer this week but today is sunny and it looked like this would be as warm as we’d get for the next couple weeks so I bundled up and headed out on the Masi. My route home took me through the UVA athletic complex and I thought I’d timed it right but didn’t and had to work my way through pre-game traffic. Big top 5 matchup against Houston today. As always in the cold weather, I warmed up quickly and was glad I got out.

They were selling fancy cycling clothes for cheap at the Chris King warehouse, so I took a chilly ride over there to see if it was cheap enough! It was actually a pretty good sale; I bought a cool, little handlebar bag and some stocking stuffers for the fambly. Always fun to check out the other hardware at these things.



I'd ride around on that, if you twisted my arm. And if this Ritchey were mine, I'd probably lock it up!



Rode home through Washington Park, with a beautiful band of light hitting the city.

One of the loneliest paths in the world no other bikers since October. But a tone of traffic on the main road.



Alma and back from Frairplay 15 miles or so round trip. Cold but nice weather mid 30's with Sun no wind and the trail was dry pavement most of the way.

Sorry about this, but I didn’t ride. I had to make an unplanned trip home to the Steele Creek Community over the weekend - drive from home thru Carlisle, PA, down the Shenandoah Valley and up thru Fancy Gap. Long dull drive but much improved by having our own jimmuller and his Southern Rail going on the CD player (Live at the Linden Tree). The Blue Ridge on one side, the Jefferson National Forest on the other and blue grass music swirling around the cabin of that old car.

Family behind me and family ahead. Getting to see many relatives and my son's family (that Grandpa’n is tiring work). Rolling along I81 for hours on end, dodging the trucks, swaying to the music and, at times, singing harmony (“down……..down……down in Beth-lee-ham”). Lots of great music but only a few “real songs” as mostly they jes made em up.

Traveling alone for 20 hours, thinking a lot about about life and death, about the past and the future and about family and home. I suppose, like most of us, for me there are many places that feel like home. And, after 150,000 miles, sometimes home is the cabin of that old car.

A cool, solo ride of just under 30 miles. I started in Berkeley and headed south along the foothills before heading toward downtown Oakland/Lake Merritt area, and then looped back home via the trail along the bay.

The first photo stop is one of my favorite local gems: Chapel of the Chimes - Julia Morgan-designed crematory ad columbarium. (For locals, they host an annual Summer Solstice Concert event which shouldn't be missed.)



Next up is the popular Fairyland on Lake Merritt near downtown Oakland. I used to take my daughter here when she was younger. It's not much as an amusement park, but it has a nostalgic charm to it.



Fairyland is located in Lakeside Park adjacent to Lake Merritt. The next couple photos are from within the park -- first a rotunda, and then a shot of the lake and bird sanctuary which extends onto the small islands.




Finally, a shot from the bay trail, looking across the bay toward Marin. A nice teaching moment shown below as a dad (presumably) is teaching his kids how to cast a fishing line.

Drillium Dude 

First ride in over two weeks; I caught a bug (probably whilst stuck in the airplane at SFO, waiting for the ATAC to come back online) after visiting family in Palo Alto two weekends ago. Only yesterday did I begin to feel I might actually survive - and this morning it was all gone. I needed to give the Bianchi's new brake levers a test ride, anyway.

Temps in the low 50s, no wind. Perfect for some small-ring spinning. Felt nice to be back in the saddle, literally

The guest house, while lovely has two fat tire beach cruisers to loan. Really only good for two things: happy hour to happy hour, and cruising around to look at the mid century modern homes which are stunning.

I know a large part of the US is getting slammed with a cold front, but it was another lovely day in the bay area. Mostly sunny with temps in the upper-50s and low-60s. I agree with @fabiofarlli - hard to believe it's almost Christmas. I went out for a couple hours and a little over 30 miles. I started by heading up the Berkeley Hills via Spruce Street and then Wildcat Canyon, then went around the San Pablo Reservoir in Orinda, before looping back to Berkeley by way of the UC Berkeley campus. Not too many photos today. Here are a few:

First, a big thanks to @Prowler for the nice comments! (Prowler, I spent much of my earlier life in that part of the world, including I-81 and even before I-81 was built. Haven't gotten down that way much lately.)

Also thanks to Prowler for pinging me with some email. I've been remiss in logging into BF. As usual, this thread has so many great pics and ride stories that they are hard to take in! We have taken the tandem out a few time over the last month or so but I didn't post anything about it. No pics either, just quiet rides though the outer ruraburbs. We have played a few shows that kept us busy and then the weather got cold and unpleasant. Tomorrow they are predicting lots of rain and wind gusts up near 55mph. Then it is supposed to get January-cold. So there isn't much riding in the near future. I'm not bike-commuting these days, mostly working from home and waiting for the post-covid stupid-traffic to subside, and the garage is too cold for recreational wrenching. All of which amounts to poor excuses for why bike thoughts have not been a high priority around here. Ah, but I have been riding the faithful UO-8 indoors almost daily! Riding indoors means never having to use the brakes. Or make turns either.

I worked Sonora yesterday, got in at 4am and was done by 9, it was 65 degrees in Lowes parking lot at 9am, it was bright full sun like Sonora gets this time of year.
Regretted not taking a bike with me, it was only 5 miles to Columbia state park, instead I headed home into the tule fog and cold..

This pic below is from short ride today early starting at 44 degrees. 20 minutes later forecasted cold front hit hard and fast dropping Temps to 25 in 20 minutes with wind chill in teens.

10 degrees forecast for tonight. We are not used to that down here in the south but I know many of you deal with much colder and snowy or icy weather.
I was glad to get indoors.


I'll try riding down to about 35 degrees but after that I'll wait for warmer temps.
