I rode into Somerville this morning, to the end of the Community Path at Lowell St. I was hoping to see one of the Green Line trains that have been running without passengers, in preparation for Monday's start of revenue service. I hung out for ten minutes, getting cold, but no Green Line train came through. However, I was rewarded with sighting an outbound Commuter Rail train, and an Amtrak Downeaster headed to Boston.

I took a video of the Amtrak train. I couldn't figure out how to embed the video, so I uploaded a frame which links to the video. Hopefully if you right click on the frame below and open a new tab, you will see the video:

From there I rode back to Alewife and checked out the Watertown Cambridge Greenway. I saw a worker installing orange tipped stakes along the sides of the path. I assume they're there to tell plow drivers where the edge of the pavement is.

This ride brought me to just over 1500 miles for 2022, which was my goal for the season. We'll see how much more saddle time I get in before it gets too cold and/or messy for my comfort.
I've been debating what my 2023 goal should be. I'm thinking 1800 is a reasonable target.

Tom

I got a call from Battle Road Bikes this afternoon, to let me know that the Atlantis had morphed from Project to Bicycle. Hurray! I drove out to Lexington and put the Atlantis on the car's bike rack, along with the Sam Hillborne that I'd taken in for some minor cockpit adjustments and which was also ready to leave. I took them both home.

After securing the Sam, I took the Atlantis for a brief shakedown ride. This mostly consisted of frequent stops to play with the saddle height, but also allowed a certain amount of joyful curiosity about the handling of this very long wheelbase bike shod with very wide, supple tires (Compass Antelope Hill Extralights). It was a good start, but I had to cut it short to get home before sunset: no lights on this one yet.

My bike-tinkering backlog, which looked so impossibly large a year ago, is mostly drawn down, thanks to the good work of Jim and crew at Battle Road Bikes. Thanks, folks! Now I'm focused on riding 'em.

Thanks! It's definitely got possibilities. It may take until Spring before the bike gets enough use to manifest some of them.

The flakes are flying! Very happy my trainer is set up for the next few months. I already miss riding outside, but I’m not buying myself any more bikes for the foreseeable future (watch me post a new bike thread in 2 weeks, followed by a divorce thread in 2.5 weeks!).

It wasn't snowing when I took the Sam Hillborne out on the Minuteman this afternoon, although Bert and Ernie assured me that if the sky wasn't falling now, it soon would be. Said it was the Principle of Weather Forecasting.

Sure enough, a few little flakes began to fall, one here, another there. After a bit we had recognizable snow flurries, which gave way to well-formed snow showers. Here they are at Arlington's Great Meadow.

The sky is falling! Keeping the rubber side down. That became an increasing preoccupation for the duration of the ride, which proceeded without incident.

Temperatures were in the upper 20s, and it seems I can only take so many photos with the gloves off before the fingertips go on strike. In consequence, I failed to photograph the several Santas on bicycles who were out, riding at first, then walking their bikes as the snow cover got a little deeper. There were, indeed, quite a few riders out, only one of whom was running on carbide studded tires. Everyone else was just using the Force, which worked pretty well under the conditions. Neither the trail nor the roads seemed to be treated (yet), which was just as well from my point of view. As it is, I got a pair of Neo Retros glacé:

Also, my first icicle goatee of the season!

FWIW - the Assabet in Maynard this morning. looks easily rideable but I think I'd rather have the studded tires on before doing so

AHHH - your pristine Sam H. is all dirty! I suppose since they hadn't treated the roads yet, it was just water.

In any case, I guess he was happy to get out.

He seemed happy... And the brakes, while encrusted, functioned adequately. Which made me happy, when I needed to stop.

cat seemed stable & Wifey got home. put the barmitts on & was thinking about getting out late on some local trails & dirt roads. but then I sliced a thumb on some open snips so I bagged the idea & went to bed & watched the SNL Christmas special which was pretty darn funny

just thinking out loud - we're gonna lose our nice cold crispy surface conditions as it warms & gets wet. it's all gonna turn to slop. Friday into Saturday sounds stormy, which is attractive, but it's gonna be wet snow. Wifey says I can ride Saturday, but the weather conditions sound less that favorable (wet snow & wind) plus there are things to do to get ready for company this weekend. the snow will be light flurries, so maybe it won't be too bad. have an appointment after work tonight so I probably won't ride tonight either

would love to work remotely today & go for a lunchtime ride but I have things to do in the office

did a little recon on my way to work (car & foot, not bike)

the Assabet in Maynard near route 27 looks much improved, don't know about other parts of it

the Bruce Freeman in Carlisle I think looked way different. some open dry stretches but a lot of it looked like this. some crunchy snow, lots of icy foot prints. some bike tracks. the layer is quite thin tho so while the ride might be bumpy it wouldn't be uncomfortable I think. just watch your footing on the icy parts

^^Is the BFRT being used for cross-country skiing at all? That was the original idea and it features prominently in the logo but the most recent newsletter seems to suggest it's not actually a "thing."

didn't see any tracks but I have seen a person or two over the years doing so. 1 guy was out in the dark w/ no light but I saw him cuz I had a lite on my bike. it doesn't get plowed that's for sure. but it's always covered in footprints. don't recall ever seeing any trail prep for skiing. I suppose if you got out there before anyone else it might be nice. this person was on the Minuteman many years ago, going along the edge. they seemed happy enough

In the intermission between rainstorms, I puzzled over the extent of the thaw, then took the 1987 GT Karakoram shod with carbide-studded Nokian W240 559-47 tires out for a short spin on the Minuteman. The trail was almost completely devoid of snow and ice, of course, and aside from persecuting some insignificant slush patties, the Nokians served no purpose beyond crackling sound effects. Oh well. It was pleasant riding the GT again, and I don't doubt that the studs will come in handy later in the season. In the meantime, the fenders kept my legs and the bike machines clean and dry.

Aside from occasional cold drizzle, all the weather was either in the immediate past, or the immediate future, and I crackled along merrily.

The Mile 4.0 Cairn Builders are in a neo-classical neolithic mood, putting up a dyad with an intermediate object, that I took to represent a family group. I admire their persistence. and often, their taste.

Onward. Or, at least, back-and-forth.

Today I was back on a bike for the first time in about a month. We had been to Germany after Thanksgiving, missing a lot of good riding weather around here, and came back with very stubborn colds, despite wearing masks on all our flights and train rides. Several CoV tests all negative, thankfully. Today it seemed like some gentle exercise on the Zizzo should be possible. Well, the 5.5 miles from Chelmsford center to H(e)art Pond on the BFRT and back was all I had in me. With a good bit of coughing and blowing my nose (into tissues, snot rockets rank pretty much with not picking up after one's dog IMO).

Soggy scenery everywhere but a fellow cyclist at the beach pointed out what may have been an eagle circling over the lake. Definitely bigger than a hawk and he said he saw it grab a fish earlier. So that was neat. Too far away to even try taking pictures though.

I noted that the bathrooms at H(e)art Pond have been removed for the season now, while in Chelmsford center they carved out a little space at the Brickhouse for a few bike racks and a bulletin board (or ad space? not sure):

Seeing cyclists as potential customers, what a novel idea. Maybe the "No bike path parking" faction over at Ginger Ale Plaza (bank, Java Room, Bertucci's) could learn from this. Not holding my breath.

So, all things considered, this does feel like the last ride for a while, so I raise my mug of chamomile tea to all of you. Season's greetings!

The rain stopped, whatever snow we had happened while I wasn't looking, and the temperature stayed commendably above freezing, in the low 40s by the early afternoon when I took the Sam Hillborne and rode East. It was windy, though.

This was my more-or-less weekly hills-and-traffic drill through Arlington, Medford, Malden, Melrose, and Stoneham; some other towns get thrown in from time to time, for variation, but not today. Time was a little short today, and I cranked along rather than stopping for pictures. It was a cloudy day, and this seemed to accelerate nightfall. Here's a bit of the sky over Melrose.

Night fell entirely too soon. December's like that in Eastern Massachusetts, of course. The Kurukulla Center is showing winter lights on the stupa and elsewhere. This is cheery, and adds a little Vajrayana mojo to the surrounding Christmas lights. Showing a light in a dark time is fundamental. People from the Land of Snows know about that.

West Medford: waiting for a train.

Got a bit of time this afternoon on the Sam Hillborne, and took it on a spin up the Minuteman to Lexington Center and back, all the schedule would allow, but radically better than nothing. Spent a good portion of the ride tinkering with saddle height and saddle tilt, and wound up with satisfactory values for both.

It was one of those brilliant December days, temperatures in the high 30s and absolutely clear, bright, and dry. The low sun and the trunks of the bare trees striped the trail with a barcode that I couldn't help but read in the flashes on my left eyelid, as I rode outbound.

The message read: "SUMMER EXPIRED".
